To be perfectly candid, I still don't see it. I mean, what I'm reading so far is basically conjecture. A hypothetical look at what can potentially be on the table. The "what if" of what ifs. There are lots of preppers within the military community, and from my own experience, here in Canada, we won't be following orders like what you're suggesting.
The other month, I was reading about how Obama has the resources to potentially declare martial law and activate troops to lock himself in power. Does that seem over the top? To me (and my psychology minor), it suggests that those propagating the rumor are arrogant enough to think that they are somehow more knowledgeable than the rest of the population, and it also shows that they don't have any faith in humanity. Negative thought patterns such as these are the "black dot focus" on the tony black dot on a clean sheet of paper. In psych, we called similar trends a paranoid delusion.
While I appreciate the fact that we're discussing this and pointing out a potential "aha!", I'd like to know if there has been a precedent here in Canada.
I don't mean to rile any feathers though. Just think of it this way - if I, a prepper, am skeptical of this argument, how might you be able to persuade a regular joe? 🙂

@RabbitTeeth... not really sure what "potential aha" you are refering to. What has been mentioned is the reality of what the government can do related to privacy as covered in our current laws . Also what has been "conjecture"? Not sure what "argument" you are skeptical of...and what you think a regular joe is trying to be persuaded of?
I think we may be getting off track here.
While I believe that we as a people have the right of freedom (and that includes the freedom of governmental oppression), I also believe that the government has the responsibility to protect the country from terrorism. Does this mean that our freedoms should and can be violated in the name of terror? Well, it shouldn't, but there is a huge debate about whether or not governments have gone too far in protecting us from terrorists, and perhaps they have.
Not trying to self promote here, but I just recorded this week's podcast and I had a lot to say about how preppers became synonymous with terrorists.
I think it all started when one person, and I don't know who was the first to do this, extrapolated a theoretic circumstance that had not actually been voiced by the DHS. It simply snowballed from there.
Now, I'm not a huge fan of any of the current political parties in Canada, but we have to ask ourselves something...
Did a government agency actually say this or is it just that a few people interpreted something and went viral with it?
I won't pretend to know the answer to this, as we are all certain that closed door meetings happen all the time and there are lots of things politicians say to each other behind these doors that you and I will never hear. But when I hear people claim that all government want to be like North Korea or that our government would murder us for our land and resources, I have to wonder just how far out these statements really are.

Hey JAB, regarding the 'potential aha' I was mostly curious about what you said about the US labeling preppers as potential terrorists, thereby giving our Canadian government the excuse to do so as well. I don't see our independence as being any threat to Canada whatsoever. If so, then we should get plenty of warning with mass arrests in more blatant separatist groups like those in Quebec. Any potential prepper"terrorists" in the US could be likely construed as such if they're stockpiling vast reserves of assault rifles and such - something we can't even legally do here in Canada.
The argument I'm skeptical of is that we're in any danger from our own government, 1984-style. I mean, governments are composed of people like you and me. And truth be told, we Canadians have a government that is far more transparent, honorable and by-the-book than anything my original third-world-country could be capable of sustaining.

My take on it is that it is a viral rumor. Here's a quick look into a US soldier (and prepper) point of view regarding the whole rumor. Note too that I asked him personally what he would do if ordered to arrest or round up preppers, and he openly stated that he'd defy the order and declare his superior unfit for duty.
