I'm glad you didn't take my post as an attack, I feared I was being rash. I was kinda concerned actually. Glad to hear you were drunk. Hey, I get that way too sometimes. To put it in perspective, you're not even 50 dude. Plenty of time to study, learn and prepare. If extinction level events occur, so be it.
Ah, you'd be surprised. Prepping has been one of the central tenets of my life since age 10. For the last 3-4 its been a full time gig. Not too much more to do. Ill put in a solar water heater next spring and a front gate...but I am pretty much done to the best of my abilities. Ive talked with Mrs C5 about it and we have decided to take a few years off prepping (not that life would look too different. The path is pretty much set and must be walked) We may not even put in much of a garden next year as we hope to travel a bit in the spring. Just continue building and multching the soil. Wile the world is still chugging along, its time to go out and have a life outside of prepping for a wile. See some places, listen to some bands, get a new hobby. Its actually a success story. We cant get much further along. The rest is up to luck.
Might just as well. I honestly started prepping in August, with the intent of turning it into an adventuring hobby of a kind. Whats the point of anything if you can't have fun, right?
my Wife works For The Real Canadian SuperStore. She works in the meat department. 4 times yearly the employees are gathered for a meeting. In this meeting the discuss the eventuality of highway closure due to flood or landslide/ snowslide/ earthquake. They are informed that if any of these natural disasters happens, deliveries of meat and produce, will be interrupted. re-supply will take one day plus the length of time that the roads or rails are impassable. That could be 2 days or even a week or more. They are told that under normal conditions, if the daily truck that delivers the meat and chicken is interrupted, the meat department will completely sell out in 7 hours or less. No resupply for at least 24 hours. If the public becomes aware of the interruption, the store will sell out in approximately 4 hours or less. This situation holds true for EVERY GROCERY STORE. Costco holds the identical same meetings. The employees are told that if the natural disaster is anticipated to be longer than 24 hours, they should go home and wait for a call back to work.
Power outages cause the same scenario. Collapse of the banking system causes the same scenario. Employees are encouraged to have enough food at home to cover their family for an EXTENDED EVENT. They are also encouraged to have extra fuel on hand, fuel truck use the same roads as Semi's carrying food and produce.
Each year the company encourages employees to invest 5% of their gross into Company shares. the company gives them one share for every two they buy. good deal. 50% on your investment overnight. What is significant however is that each year, EVERY, year for the past 11 years, those shares have risen in value more than 17 percent PER YEAR!!!!. That mean that in order to pay out a 17% plus dividend, the company had to earn (MORE THAN 17 PERCENT). How is this done you ask??? every year, year over year, you, the consumer, are paying MORE THAN A 17 PERCENT INCREASE ON THE FOOD YOU BUY. We would like to thank all of you for doing this. This allows us to buy an extra 67% more food than you can, each and every year. You leave your money in the bank, you get maybe 2% interest. the interest is taxed. We buy food, It goes up in value by at least 17 % per year. And to top it all off we get a 10 percent discount. Money in the bank does nothing for you. It is being eaten by inflation, and do not believe the bull that is reported as annual inflation rates. Go buy 100 dollars worth of food today, keep the receipt for one year. go to the same store, and buy the same list of products a second time...SURPRISE!! YOU NEED $120 OR MORE to pay for it. Each year, year over year. after only 4 years you pay $200 for the same basket of food that you bought 4 years ago. Tip: invest in Loblaws Stocks :))

Nice. My girls are young, 9 and 11, and I want to teach them the skills they will need, etc. But I also want to teach them to strike a balance between being prepared and living in today, enjoying what we have now that we might not have in the future. That way, when they are 40-something, they won't feel all they've done their whole lives is prep LOL. I am learning to bring balance into my own life, something I have struggled with, and this is definitely one area in which I need it. Doing OK with it, too! 🙂
Tip: invest in Loblaws Stocks
Invest in farmland and yourself.
I have farmland, We are liquidating stocks etc. to prep, bought a backhoe, bury the preps. Dig remote shelter.
Never anything specific! But we have always tried to keep supplies on hand in case of power outages and storms and such. We live in rural NB, Canada and both come from large families that grew up poor. Stockpiling or prepping come easy to us and we are very well versed at preserving our harvest and the bulk items we buy.
With the current up serge in unrest around the world we believe that we will start prepping on a more serious note! China moving ballistic missiles onto islands they made just to piss off the US. North Korea....need I say more. The Canadian dollar took a shit and left half the country unemployed. The Government(lol), wants to and is continuing to give away my tax dollars........ I could go on for some time but you get my drift.
So. We will take a good look at our situation and upgrade in areas as needed and hope it never is.
1.Ice storms (not safe to leave the house, happened 2 years back).
2.Neighbourhood/City-wide Power Outage due to weather
3. EMP
4. and 5. not sure, too many possibilities
1. Natural disaster (earthquake..Eastern Ontario is overdue for 7.0 magnitude one)
2. Ice storm
3. Power grid failure from EMP, CME or massive cyber attack
4. Pandemic

1. Old age / retirement
2. Job loss / disability / illness
3. Personal calamity
4. The perfect storm of Federal Liberals and Provincial NDP 😯

Finally someone with a realistic list .
1.) Zombies
2.) Alien Invasion
3.) Invasion by US troops or anti-Trump voters
4.) Major outbreak of airborn cooties
5.) Weaponized chipmunks
No, just kidding...
1.) Poverty
2.) Homlessness
3.) Prolonged illness
I guess, for me, the primary reasons are:
1. I live in an area where we are frequently reminded of the need to be prepared and keep 72 hours worth of supplies. We had a situation quite a while back where our tap water was undrinkable for over a week - the grocery stores were in chaos in the water aisles. That situation made me realise how quickly chaos will set in if something even more than the water being undrinkable for a week occurred.
2. I have a high stress job and sometimes need to take unpaid time off to de-stress and re-group. It's nice to know that if my cash flow decreases in this time, I have food on hand to save some money.
3. I think a part of me dreams of living a much simpler lifestyle with no technology and a return to nature. Realistically, I don't have the ability or finances to do that, so prepping allows me to.... kind of have that dream, in a way. Don't know if that one makes any sense!
4. I watch way too many disaster movies/TV shows and get a little too paranoid!
Give a man a gun, and he can rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he can rob the world.
I am prepping for bankruptcy.
I live in Greece and i am afraid that we will leave EU soon and return to our currency. After the brexit many big companies in my country going bankrupt and with the problem of refugees..The prices and taxes are going to crazy numbers (for example the monthly salary is 600euros per month,a good salary and the electricity this month came 200euros.)
I am watching in the grocery stores people taking more pasta, flour, etc because they are afraid bankruptcy.
This month the goverment gave only the half retirement salary because they don't have to pay for more..and the people are sad and angry.
Also they are bringing 700 refugees in my city.I am living in a small city and we don't have police station, only 4 police man patrols the city and they are saying we don't have the people to guard the refugees but the goverment doesn't care.In north greece part of macedonia is the heavy industry and the fields for all Greece and they are bringing them here,so they are firing greek people from their jobs and hiring people from syria with the half salary to earn more profit. We already reached 75% uneployment with 9/10 closed factories, because they flew in Bulgaria for less taxes.
We have geostratigical problems with turkey.Every day we are watching in the news that they are tresspassing our boarders and we are trying to defend our nation. We already doing military excersices and preparing for war if it's nessecary.
I hope from all this,to end good because it's a dirty game.
