How can an earthquake happen in an area which had no plate boundaries? How is it possible that an earthquake occurred today in Ottawa, Canada, an area of North America which has no plate boundaries near by to cause an earthquake. Is there a fault line or something there that could have caused it?

There is a very ancient, significant fault line that runs from Temiskaming down the Ottawa valley through Quebec to the gulf of St. Lawrence. It roughly approximates the route of the Ottawa river.
