Define old. I don't want to be used as bait, not yet anyway.

Doctors prescribe pills for a number of reasons but rarely to "cure" the underlying problem that has caused the condition. As time goes on medication lists tend to lengthen. Personally I do not feel that this is a good thing. I am not into herbal medicines and know little to nothing about them but if push came to shove I am sure that there is a herbal remedy that would suffice to augment someone's medication list.

Wow, I just think I added herbal medicines to my list! Anyway all that being said I am somewhat old school. My parents have been gone for a long time but if they were alive I would be taking them no matter what shape they were in.

I think any knowledge and training you get in first aid (consider doing wilderness training, as it covers so much more for when you without being able to just call and folks arrive),along with growing and learning about healing herbs/plants is very worth while, I recommend not just training in plants that are for healing but learn about pain management, what can be used (certainly not fool proof ) for birth control/after birth help, as well as what can be used to help in end of life planning in regards to plants and mushrooms (which to a point could ONLY in a SHTF) as a form of self-defence as well.

Having said that, and I have spent years on it and will continue to do so for as long as possable, the short answer for me in regards to the above is, No, my step-dad would be gone within a week and nothing I grow or raise or can make will stop that, without being able to run the required tests and the drugs he is on, he would not be here, my mother is harder, she could live for longer but she would be in a cripple and in so much pain that she would have to be allowed to drink or use some other kind of pain med, but would have little to no qauility of life and I figure three months tops, the one that would last the longest and who if I was there, would be my father, as he is diabetic but still being able to control it with mild meds and food choices, so that one truly would have a chance for a number of years etc if managed correctly..

Having said that, I have a girlfriend who is in her 30's and I have done all the research, and I can find nothing to date that would be able to work for her personal condition, and while it would be a slow decline over a number of months once the meds were gone, she would not be long with us..

Well farmgal I would say you have a plan! Not only are you preparing for yourself but others too. At the same time you are realistic. Your plan includes a group and you are well on the way to sustainability. I assume that you have at this for some time. Many will be envious of your current position but given time and with your guidance everyone can reach the same goal. Keep up the good work!

We have a plan and its always being worked on, and there is lots! of room for improvement! Yes, I do think a small working group would be the best choice if its available to me.. I was raised in a way that would now be considered a prepper lifestyle and so in many ways, yes, been at it my whole life, and so much left to do, but each little thing adds up and works in the big picture.

"Infirmed or 'nutty'". Sensational! that lets me off the hook, for now anyway. Wait there are few people who consider me a bit 'nutty'. Maybe I'm not out of the bait business yet.

Well this Gramma hopes that I'll not be forgotten!! In fact, I'm the Prepper in the family. I'm still teaching my grown children about "life" or they come to me for gardening info (what/when to plant) or even construction how-to's (wiring/plumbing, etc even though I probably couldn't build a house by myself anymore) or cooking or "putting up" food/winter storage (potatoes, carrots, onions, squash, etc) or the difference between heating with seasoned (cut last season) hardwood (more BTUs/heat) and softwood (better than nothing but makes more creasote) or why they should be prepared/have extra supplies on hand. I know that, even though I'm older and not as physically able as I was 20-30 years ago, I still have a wealth of information and skills............ Ya, so I think I'll be handy to have around after TEOTWAWKI.....
Anyone better look-out if they try to put ME out as bait - I can use my axe for more than splitting firewood! LOL
I agree with another prepper, that many older people have lost skills just waiting to be re-born. They can be our biggest asset.

Well said Prepher...you've probably forgotten more than I've learned! There is no better teacher than experience, no matter what books you've read. When SHTF, you're welcome with me anytime.

My bait comment was not for able bodied people.

most can still teach even if they can not do...

besides I don't want to be bait 😥

How about all the meds that seniors are being pumped full of these days...high blood pressure and all those other pills the doctors are pushing? Will we be able to regulate the health issues of our elders with diet and herbals?

If we don't then the prognosis is not good. However 75 years ago people with high BP survived just fine and there was no mass extinction. 😉

Ther is a new school of though developing where the long term benefit of any medication is weighed against the possible negative effects of a condition left untreated. As an example high blood pressure. Other than the obvious risk of stroke there are many insidious effects of hypertension. It takes years for these effects to manifest themselves. In older patients is it worth plying them with medications that have side effects that reduce quality of life... in order to reduce end stage effects that after a cetain age the person won't live long enough to suffer from??? The answer is clearly NO !!!
