So... what is this new solar water purification "technology"?
It is basically setting bottled water out in the sun on a black hot tin roof for a couple of hours. That's it! The combination of the sun's ultra violet rays and heat kills any pathogenic germs - the ones that spread much illness in developing countries. Just about anybody can do this

It's not purified but pasteurized and the UV light helps kill live bacteria.
I think using a plastic bottle would introduce other undesirable elements - glass is always a better choice. I'll bet if you put a clear glass bottle inside a glass fronted box you could even boil the water- condensation would fog up the box but maybe you could put a loose cap on it.
It will taste flat. Pour back and forth to get oxygen back in will improve the taste.
