On a different note, buy lots of .22 ammo! It's cheap, stores easily and unlike gold, you can have fun using it. Hehe.
Tell her you will settle for a light 50 😆
Okay,,,
Forget what everyone has said. I will let you in on a secret.
There is no right or wrong answer to that question. Even if we know every little details about you and what you prepare for there would still not be a magic number which we can give you that would be enough.
The only answer is: prepare as much as you can within your financial limits on firearms and ammo without neglecting magazines, spare parts and all the other essential preps such as water, food etc.
You need a good balance in your preps and only you can answer what your scenario looks like in terms of your shtf scenario, location, population threats etc. The answers to some of those questions will give you a good idea whether 100 rounds is enough for your rifle or 1000 rounds is or even more. A large stockpile of ammo and a firearm is not prepping. Prepping is having diversified stocks of stuff in place before a shtf scenario which prevents you from dying (thirst, starvation, exposure etc) until society is reestablished.
Even when you have all your preps in place you should continue stockpiling ammo as it can be used as barter and if you store it dry it will never go bad.
I'm not disputing anyone!!! The thread on sniping is very interesting, might be worth starting its own thread so it can be easier found from the search function.
On a different note, Mrs HP said no to buying a .50... you know for when I would have to defend the house against robbers, hiding behind the fridge, in the neighbors' kitchen ;p
Anyone who likes guns, just wants a 50. No way to justify it of course but dang it’s tempting purchase. Now , buying a thousand rounds for it my bankrupt you 😀
I also heartily agree with your 22 comment, cheap, and fun. Poachers and old sharp eyed pros can take a moose down with them. Not too many moose in typical CANADIAN city of course but....
Ten round mags, rifle and ammo are light,...you could easily carry a few hundred rounds on you and not even notice. true they don’t chew up wood or go through cinder blocks but if a person can shoot straight and doesn’t just keep pulling the trigger, a round in the head, chest, leg... will take person down or slow them up. Not my ideal assault rifle by any stretch but if I could only have one rifle, it would be a 22 semi But that 50, would be fun to look at 😐

The 50 would just go through the fridge. No place to hide... Dam, what a sweet round!
As far as Sniping is concerned, I think it does relate to the topic at hand. How many rounds you need is directly proportional to the number of rounds required to hit the target. One shot, one kill. 🙂

Good choice. I'd prefer the 12 Ga. but like we discussed before, it has a tendency of ripping-up the inside of a house... 🙂
None you improvise, one (or more) is luxury.
A couple of weeks ago, a guy came into our store looking for non-lethal rounds for his 12 gauge. He wanted them for bears when he was on his mountain camping trips. Because the bears are all hibernating this time of year, no one is carrying the non-lethal rounds right now. I suggested that he remove the pellets from some rounds he already has and replace them with plastic, airsoft pellets. I'm thinking that this may also be useful for in-home defence. It would certainly make your targets take notice and you wouldn't need to worry so much about over-penetration.
Those who are unwilling to defend freedom, will become unfree.

I wouldn't want to shoot a grizzly with a 12 Ga, slug let alone a non-lethal round. It would just tick him off. lol
