22 magnum is up to the task, as long it is legal. Quiet too. Other than that the 22 hornet. That will git her done. Good luck.
I personally use an 870 in 20 gauge, as well as a Tikka .270 & a Ruger .223 Mini 14........
20 gauge is fine for "close work"
.270 ? Have fun but the pelts will generally be worthless.
.223 I have a mini-14 Target model: not exceptionally accurate at longer range.
My "go-to" for varmits is a Browning A-bolt in 22-250. Small hole and accurate to at least 400 yards (sometimes 😀 )
Sometimes you just use what you have available: other times you have a specific tool for the job.

Depending on location and circumstances...
Mossberg MVP in .223 is nice in that it shares mags with the AR-15 platform. Nice varmint round too!

Jonesy, how do you like your MVP and, if you don't mean telling, what was your sticker price? I'm debating a Ruger All-American Ranch or a Mossberg MVP,m either in 5.56. The former seems to be about 1/2 the price of the MVP; they look similar, but if my memory serves me well, the MVP also has iron sights on it. If you prefer, PM me details.
Thanks in advance.
