I find if you take a cheap knife apart and bronze the handle rod good, you will have just as good of knife as an expensive one. If the blade is too soft,
heat with torch and dip in oil 4 to six times......tempers steel.

SOG Machete- Got this at a local gunstore for around $80 dollars. Took it camping with me over the easter weekend and 4 chops in the edge started bending and chipping. Avoid.

I have to disagree on the sog, I got mine in the gunstore for about $40 and its been great I was using it while I was clearing out deadwood in an area with heavy bush and thought it was great.

Gerber, Cold Steel, SOG have all gone for profit over quality so are a no go for me.

Stay away from any company that went out of business but the name was brought by someone else, these are now fake knives as far as I am concerned as the new company often buys the rights to the name only rather than buying the factory and workers.

Stay away from brand name companies known first for other things: S&W, Winchester, etc. Make guns not knives. Surefire makes flashlights not knives. We live in an era where most North American companies no longer make products but rather just buys them from Chinese factories and slaps their name on it. I got a SOG knife from China and the quality is "right up there" with all the other flea market Chinese knives I've handled, the weight and ergos are poorly done.

Well I was going to join the UK Network but those bloody Brits don't know how to speak proper English! 😉

I agree with you about gerber, I think they even look poor quality. I got one of there folding knives because a girlfriend thought I was weird for carrying my multitool (she didn't last) and I always feel like im gonna break it when I use it.

Avoid: Bear Grylls. The Bear Grylls Knives in my opinion are crap. The Fixed blade was recalled within a week. and the Parang has now been recalled and will not be sold because of how crappy it is.

I find Cold Steel to be a good brand. the lockback knives are really sturdy.

I received a Buck Paklite skinning knife with an OFAH sheath from OFAH as part of a sign-up bonus. No real complaints other than its sharp as hell and I manage to cut myself just about every time I use it. I'm betting that one is on me. I think I'm going to do a paracord wrap around the handle, since its one solid piece of steel. I've been using it for just about everything. Its good for shaving sticks into tinder. I've looked up a few reviews, and most seem to agree its a decent knife that comes very sharp out of box. http://www.knifecenter.com/item/BU140SSS/Buck-Paklite-Skinner-Stainless-Steel-Skinning-Knife-2-78-inch-Blade

Second the Bear Grylls warning. Apparently the plastic handles were made with defective plastic and they had a high failure rate. Ouch. Its a shame because Gerber made some good knives but they obviously went really cheap on that line which makes me really suspect the entire brand is slipping in quality due to it being over mass produced in China. But I guess if you stay in resorts like Bear Grylls did when he was filming his 'survival' show then you don't really need a good knife anyways;)

Have two BG Parangs. They are ok for now but do feel cheap.
