Excellent notes from everyone. 9mm browning, even 9mm short. Gun needs to feel right in your hand. Practice makes almost any gun very lethal.
My first pistol was a Glock G22 in .40 SW I have since added a 9mm barrel and a different .40 made by Storm so I can shoot reloads . I also have a .22 adapter for it which means I can shoot till the cows come home with all three calibers
My two cents. There are those who swear by their Glocks and those who have no use for them. Personally, if someone gave me a Glock, I'm not sure I would even consider them to be a friend anymore. As it happens, I'm a Sig snob. I love my Sig Nightmare in .45. That being said, I'll never get rid of my CZ85 either. In my job, I shoot a variety of guns, several times a week and those two have been consistently good to me.
Having said that, all of those who suggest trying several kinds of handguns are right on the money. Find the gun you're most comfortable with and chances are you'll tend to practice more with it. No matter the gun, be it Glock, CZ, Sig, S&W, etc., whichever one fits you best is the gun to go with.

Sig snob. Love it and love the Sig. as you and I said in earlier post, the gun needs to feel right.
Have a sig saur rifle and it’s a very nice piece of machinery. Bolt slides and snaps into place ever so slick. When choosing my gun, I tried a top of the line weatherby and it felt like a 1970 pickup compared to a Ferrari. Sig all the way 😎

I prefer a Glock, but like the Sig as well. I think it's what you get use to. After you fire 100,000 rounds out of anything, you're going to get use to it. You adapt your grip by muscle memory and the bullet will go where you want it to. Pick-up another handgun that you don't have the same experience with and you'll say that you don't like it as well. Fire 100,000 rounds out of it and you now have a new favorite...
My issue with a handgun is more the caliber than anything. For me, I can do more damage with a 9mm than say a 45. The 45 takes too long to get back on target. When it comes to a handgun in a tactical situation, I opt for the best balance of power, accuracy and volume. To each his own...
None you improvise, one (or more) is luxury.
Sorry, I have a few pistols, but the Glock 17 remains my "go to" for fun shooting. Can't say I have a 100,000 rounds through it (I wish I could afford it!) but certainly a few thousands...
Wayne, you're absolutely right, 9mm does re-acquire quicker than a .45. I actually try to use that to my advantage. After having watched quite a few dashcam and bodycam videos of police gunfights. I've noticed something. When the heat suddenly turns up and it's go time, most fire their first shot too fast and it ends up hitting low. Also, unless you are an ERT team member, chances are that even when you wear body armour, you're not wearing a groin plate.
I decided to use the heavier recoil of my .45 to take advantage of those two facts. Now, whenever I practice on my own, my first shot is to the groin. Then I ride the recoil up to second shot into center of mass. It allows me to get the first round off a fraction quicker and I don't waste as much time re-acquiring for the second round. In a gunfight, this would spread the trauma around, instead of trying to keep it in one area.
Plus, when you shoot off somebodies man bits, they tend to get a little distracted. At least that's the theory.

I can't say that I've ever used a groin plate. As a tactical member, I was the sniper so wasn't always in the breach. It really depended on the situation. It's not something the tactical teams I've worked with have used. Another advantage to the 9mm in a handgun for an assaulter is that the MP5 also uses 9mm. You don't want to carry more than one caliber ammunition if you can get away with it.

It's really what you get use to. Whatever works for you and your team is great. Everyone should carry the same caliber, so as to distribute as required. I've never encountered a team that preferred to use 45, for the reasons I've given. But whatever works... 🙂

Of the people I train with, I'm the only one who prefers the .45. The rest carry 9mm. Two also have 9mm carbines, with the rest preferring 5.56 long guns. Myself and one other carry long guns in 7.62, mine is an M14 Archangel and the other is a Ruger Scout. If it came down to it, I also have a CZ85 in 9mm and an M4gery in 5.56. So I can adapt if need be. But I do love my .45.

I agree completely that it is a personal decision. Go shoot different handguns and then decide which one feels best for you. My newest is a M&P and I really enjoy shooting it! I think there are pro's and cons to many a handgun.
From a preppers perspective...ammo should be easily found and cheap.
Also, plan ahead...not just as an individual, but as a group!
If your in a group, all of you should be using the same ammo /'s
(not necessarily the same gun)
BUT...Being able to have interchangeable parts and pieces IS a plus if you all decide on one model.
Learn to make your own ammo as a group if you can-it's a great prep!!!
I have different handguns and I practise with them all!
Yes, the topic was if you could have one gun! BUT that "one gun" IS only a matter of opinion!!!
I believe, more importantly... be proficient with it!
Might need to change the post’s title to “Zero Pistol”

Insanity! Or maybe not. Unarmed population has always been a dream of dictatorships
It is so maddening and I could vent a lot, but I don’t want to hijack the thread...

The utter lunacy of current and proposed laws is hard for any intelligent person to comprehend. When things make no sense to logically thinking individuals, one needs to look at other motives behind what is said or imposed upon oneself. Always a motive and when well played, it’s never truly evident until it’s too late. Great when your the executioner, not so much fun when one is the target or victim
You can bet that soy boy will expect us to just turn in our pistols. The thing is, I paid good money for them and unless the government plans to pay a fair price for them, they ain't gettin' them. I'll disassemble them and drop all the parts in a deep lake before I just "give" them to the government.
