Does anyone have any experience with this type of action on a rifle? I realize that they are not very popular, as I hav not been able to find many manufacturers for it. A friend of mine recently got their PAL and is interested in one, so I thought I would do some research on them. They are looking at the Remington 7600 in 30-06, which seems to have solid reviews. Does anyone know of any other makers? the 7600 retails for around $900, so if there were any model types that are less expensive and still have a similar stand up reputation I would really appretiate the info!

Hello Buggie

If I may make a humble suggestion depending on what this rifle will be used for. I have purchased a couple of Russian sks rifles and upgraded them. They are cheap, very reliable, dead easy to maintain and repair. The ammo is dirt cheap and parts can be interchanged. One can be purchased for about $200. I upgraded the stock and installed a scope. Total cost for with rifle was under $500. This is a semi-auto but I swear by it. This is my main rifle for hunting. The stock rifle is fine on it's own with the iron sites, but I do alot of mid range (200 yards) predator hunting with it, hence the scope. A pump action rifle is nice to have, but if it ever breaks it would be difficult to repair on your own. If this doesn't suit your needs most gun shops have alot of used guns for sale at decent prices.

Just my 2 cents....good luck.

It's pretty much the same action as on a pump shotgun, been around forever and proven.
The 30-06 is a lot of round though. This would probably not be such a great choice especially for a new shooter. These are sporting rifles and very light, made to carry all day long and fire one shot. You start running rounds through this and it's going to loose the fun factor. 30-06 is for hunting beyond 200 yards and really expensive for just shooting at cans.
For a first center fire why not look at something a little less powerful, a little heavier like an SKS in 7.62x39 or an M1A clone in .308. They can be had for cheap and you can shoot all day for very little money, especially with the SKS.
30-06 is going to cost at least $1 per round, SKS maybe a quarter of that. It adds up fast.
If he really wants a pump gun, get a .22. Browning makes a fine .22 pump. You can shoot all day for $20.

I already have a chinese sks, and I love it. I recomended it to them, but they seem to have an affinity for the pump action. I don't think this person plans on doing a lot of shooting, but will be more of an occasional shooter. Just wondering if anyone has used the remington 7600 or knows of any similar fire arms.

Here is a rifle similar to what you are mentioning. Pump action and takes AR magazines. Price is around $800.

I just tried a few online cdn stores but no one was mentioning that Remington...

Do you know of anyone who is carrying it? I was seriously considering the norinco with the magazine but have heard they have a tendency to jam.

thanks,

I think if you get a good deal on one, its worth getting. However, if you spent $600+ on a bolt action rifle, then its a better gun for the money. A bolt action will be more accurate and more dependable. A pump action remington rifle, is kind of like a remington semi auto rifle, but you manually cycle it. A bolt action is a better gun. The pump gun is an okay gun, but I would not buy one unless I came apon a great deal...and even then I personally would not buy it, just because I know a semi is around the same price & accuracy, or a bolt action is more accurate, and durable for probably less money. A pump rifle can't be compared to a bolt action for long range accuracy, and especially with a long cartridge like 30/06 it can not cycle at the worst of times if you short stroke the pump action, causing a jam. They are'nt as popular as bolt actions or semis because they just don't excel at speed vs a semi or accuracy vs a bolt action. Usually the only guys I ever see using a pump rifle are the guys that were given the rifles, or got one used for really cheap. Sorry for being a downer if you like them, but its my honest .02¢

The Remington Pump 7600 in 30-06 is a great rifle if they want a pump action. Over the decades that Remington has produced the 760 and 7600 pump action rifles they have been well favoured, especially by hunters who like a quick second shot on a moving target. The model 750 and 760 were and still are good enough for many law enforcement agencies in North America and have been for many years.
A friend of mine has one in 308 and is very happy with it. I mounted a 3-12X44 Bushnell Tactical with and illuminated mil-dot on it for her.
I have worked up custom loads for it which she will be testing soon.
Even with factory ammo I have been happy with the accuracy. We have been able to get 1MOA off the bench with Match ammo. And consistently stay within 1.5 MOA. Once the right load has been built I am certain these numbers will improve.
The 7600 has a rotating bolt so it has good lockup when chambered and the barrels are free floated which aids in good accuracy.
When we talk about accuracy it is important to determine what the person buying the firearm is trying to achieve with it. Is the 7600 chambered in 30-06 Springfield accurate enough to take big game animals at normal hunting ranges out to 400 yards? YES!! Is it possible to consistently hit small targets at the extreme range of the cartridge? That is up to the shooter to find out.

Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...

I think the pump action is one of the better rifles actions for the simple reason that it is a natural motion that does not require changing position to chamber another round. 7600 +++++

Having said that, the front grip and the slide can on occasion become loose to the point that they rattle when carried. Not good if you are stalking a deer.. LOL

The 870 Magnum Marine is a very good 12 gauge shoot gun it has been proven in combat and in house cleary or close combat you want a shoot gun this is the way to go it short not long like a duck 12 gauge mind me it would do the job but the 870 can be handel much easier they go around 600 I got mine equip with a red dot to aim in the right place

In my experience the only action that allows you to fire a second or more times without moving is semi-automatic. Even pump actions require one to move within firing position.
