Hi All,
Just like the subject says, I'm looking for suggestions for a good hunting/general purpose knife. Haven't got a bundle of cash to spend.

And I'm not thinking self-defence at all. Hunting in the fall; cutting rope, opening boxes, etc all the time. At some time in the future, I'll upgrade to a good hunting knife and this one will get tucked into a vehicle or bob or something.

Cheers!

Everyone has their favorites. Are you talking fixed blade or folding? It seems you are suggesting and EDC which would then likely be folding. Spyderco Delica are good but might be a bit pricey most are around $60. Buck will do the job: Bones combo or Paralle X for under $30 or the Mini Bones for under $20. I like Cold Steel knives, something micro recon will set you back about $25.

A lot will depend on the length of the blade, type of edge and the weight that you would like. The size of your hand is another factor to consider. It is always best to get the feel of the knife in your hand before you purchase it. Some are just uncomfortable to hold and use.

The delica gets great reviews all around - I think I'll try to find one and see how it feels.

Next question tho, which version? I don't know much about knives yet.

I picked up a 5.11 Tactical "Min-Pin" Folding knife. http://www.511tactical.com/All-Products/Accessories/Min-Pin-Folding-Knife-Plain-Edge.html

great little pocet folder based on the spiderco delica design, for a fraction of the price. I picked mine up at 9-1-1 tactical supply in Calgary for around $20 bucks at the front counter. I keep it on me everywhere, and have used it for everything from cutting metal bailing wire to opening envelopes. easy to sharpen with a pocket blade sharpener too. No sheath is needed, as it has the pocket clip to attach right inside your pant pocket, or wherever else you wish to put it. also has a lanyard hole if thats your thing.

See you all after.

Let us know where you are geographically. Someone can then point you to your local knife shop for the actual knife try outs. If you get the Delica go with the FRN scales and for your first blade avoid serrations or combo edges. If you see something you like I can pm you my online guys Ebay info. Gives you one more option on price comparison.

That 511 looks like a nifty knife at that price point. Nice to buy a few for car/coat pockets

I'm in the interior of BC, near castlegar - don't think there are any knife shops close by. It's sad, but Canadian tire will probably have the best selection around here

Seriously...do not spend a cent until a blade is in your hand. While I have lot's of knives, I can honestly say the knives I put in my hand, before buying on line are my absolute favorite's....Seriously. hold off on buying any knife..figure out if it's fixed ar folding blade...BOB or EDC, then walk into a knife store (at some point in your future) and buy the knife that fits, feels and look best to what you are looking for.
If you're this green on knives, then yourt first shouldn't be online...as most firsts...make it count!!

Unless you are on your fifteenth knife, and have a general knowledge of what you like or want, then on line is the last place you wanna be...

Just my humble opinion,

I am a huge fan of the Buck Special Model 119 Knife or any in that line up. They have been made the same way now for over 18 years, just make sure to have a few big sharpening stone to keep it razored. good for hunting, def, and general purposes. it's pretty cheap considering it is one of the best in it's field in my mind and all. http://www.cabelas.ca/product/577/buck-special-model-119-knife

I have had one of those for many years It is great knife and holds an edge. I don't carry it around every day though due to weight and size. Still it is a great hunting knife and would not be without it in the bush.

Thanks for all the input! I think I'm gonna wait for my next trip to 'the big city' before I buy anything - I'd like to handle a few of these recomendations.
