all i have to say is that if you plan on shooting dirty commie ammo, then buy a dirty commie gun. my sks eats up that garbage steel core for breakfast!

if not, then go with the ruger. let us know what you think of it.

oh and just fyi... you can buy a case of 10 sks for the price of a good mini 30. more money for ammo

See you all after.

Hey Beav,

Any closer to a decision??? What are you going to get?? Mini-30 or a tricked out SKS?? Have fun either way.

I hope he got the SKS. "Centre fire rifle & high volume of rounds" can only be for one purpose, the odds of which are so far from the realm of possibility that it's almost wasted effort. No point in throwing perfectly good money at it.

Should go with the siminov SKS from Marstar. $360.00 get you the semi auto rifle and 1,440 rounds of ball ammo
And while your at it order lots of stripper clips

I have both a Polytech M305 (.308) and a Russian SKS (7.62 X 39). If I had to choose one of the two, I would have to recommend the SKS. It is lighter, has a similar barrel length, is very easy to move from target to target with, and is very rugged and reliable. Loading from stripper clips is quite fast as well. I don't use corrosive ammunition for any of my firearms, but I choose to clean them after each outing anyways. The SKS does have a shorter sight raduis than the M305, but there are aftermarket solutions to that!
It is also important to bear in mind what you plan on shooting and at what distance, before making your own decision.

SKS is a good way to go. Reasonably accurate, durable, reliable, and cheap. There is a reason the Russians made millions and half the world copied it.

Don't be afraid of eastern bloc milsurp (corrosive primers) ammo. Its cheap compared to western and can be bought by the crate for 1/3 of what you pay for.

An easy way to clean after practice is diluted windex. Simply pour it down the barrel after shooting. Clean it as you should any gun when you get home. I've shot thousands of rounds of it and none of my guns show any green. I clean well but I'm not especially anal about it.

Cheaper rounds means more practice. Guns are fun!

LOL SKS unless you make your own 100 round drum (vary easy) your still talking about a rifle that was designed to fight in a city 100 yard at best. I have the best 1954 Tula and it is far from a good wepon to defend yourself at over 100 or put lead downrange for supressive fire you can spray and pray but I would sugest praying more.
Your not interested in 5.56 why? I went into combat many times and it did the job just fine. Yah listen to morons buy offshore junk to stake your life on and wile your at it buy a china BOV you might make it to the end of the street.

um...

We are not all snipers, or ex-military, or even highly trained. the sks is inexpensive, battle proven, inexpensive ammo, and funtions as well as any 5.56 carbine within 300 meters in skilled hands. As a prepper I dont think a rifle for defence outside of that range is really necessary. If you need to reach out and touch someone past 300 meters, you wont be doing it with a ar-15 in 5.56 either (usually because its jammed up from some stray grain of dust). if you want more range, get a long range rifle. the 7.62 round is a killer, not a maimer like the 5.56. in a shtf scenario, if you are forced to defend yourself against someone, I would not recommend wounding them. If you going to pull the trigger, make sure they go down, period. Also, try hunting with a 5.56 round. sure you might be able to shoot the fly off a deers ass, but good like finding that deer when it runs for 18 miles after you shoot it. the 7.62 round will drop any game animal in North America with decent shot placement.

I can load my sks on stripper clips as fast as most people can change out a magazine. This came with hours of practice to be sure, but I am comfortable with it. Also, with the attached magazine, in a long term shtf, if you ran out of stripper clips you can still hand load your firearm. try doing that with a magazine fed rifle. Unless you are a high speed space shuttle door gunner, then dont buy the $2000 rifle. It will just turn into an expensive club in the end.

So to recap the benifets of the SKS:

- Battle Proven
- 7.62x39mm cartridge (reasonably accurate, with plenty of stopping power)
- accurate out to 300 meters (sights are in meters, not yards)
- Can be used for defense and hunting
- inexpensive. most can be had for under $200
- inexpensive and common ammunition
- can be speed loaded with stripper clips, or manually loaded
- simple construction which means simple maintenance and repair
- Wooden Stock (a benifet in many ways. with simple wood working skills you can make a replacement... you can also "buttstroke" a bad guy if need be. try doing that with a plastic ar-15 "telescoping folder buttstock")
- non-restricted firearm
- large aftermarket sector (if your interested in that sort of thing. magazine adaptors, scopes, etc. not worth it in my opinion, but its there)
- bayonet included (knife blade or spike, depending on model. russian has blade, chinese has spike. i prefer the spike)
- built to military spec (as all surplus rifles are)
- Very durable. ive seen them covered in mud, dropped in lakes, filled with sand... and they still go boom.
- will literally shoot ANY kind of 7.62x39 ammo... from corrosive commie surplus, to hunting loads, to match grade.

the list goes on and on... but the SKS gets my vote for sure. Next on my list would be a CZ858.

See you all after.

I have to recommend marstar here in Canada.

I bought the 1500 rounds of Ammo and got the $75 SKS deal through them.

All in it was a bit over $500 before some extra mods which i did not even add on. The iron sights are pretty good on it right out of the box.

Shoots real straight and actually looks super cool, I bought an aftermarket stock for it but cannot bring myself to put it on. The stock is beautifully coloured and I just cannot bring myself to mess with it.

The marstar SKS is a Chinese version, check out the wikipedia page on the SKS for a great history.

I will post some pics of the cleaning mess from the removal of the oil it was packed in, cleaning it was a great get to know your weapon morning.

what are you blathering about. If you have some useful information then post it.

Yes I also ordered the SKS from Marstar. I also got the ati aftermarket stock, and I hated it. Put it on, then took it off. I stripped the wood stock down with some sandpaper, put on a coat of ebony wood stain and two coats of gloss varnish, and I think it turned out very well.

Darwin.... even though you have been accepted as a member here.. you are still a guest. Instead of being rude and obnoxious perhaps you could enlighten us with a little wisdom and factual information. Tell us something about yourself. Where did you serve? With what unit? When? How old are you? Where are you from?
