I have found nothing more usefull than a welder...I took it up late in life, maybe 21+ years back, and taught myself...made lots of misstakes, both with equipment and technique...still make them....the finer points I have learned if you buy a small migwelder, use fluxcore...even though they will all say you can use .035 wire, just use .030 with .035 the machine has a much lower duty cycle, you will often trip your breaker. Never buy princess auto brand fluxcore wire..ever...ever...Lincoln or Esab not any other off label...did I mention never buy Princess auto flux core wire, or zip disks!!!crap...crap...and crap.
while I started with mig, I find I like stick a lot now, infact it seemed impossible to me to use at first ...I started on a AC buzz box, not the way to start... Get a DC stick welder, and use stainless rods to start, first time I used stainless rods I could not believe how much easier it was to learn, to strike up and lay a bead...great rods to learn with. Also I never even drill now in steel I just light up a rod and burn my way through, infact I roughly cut out parts with a rod and clean them up with a grinder. I have fancy inverter welders like Miller 150' s maxstar 200' or some such things, they are just ok But the best welder I have is a old miller dialarc 250 ac/dc...its almost a sexual experience lighting up a rod, I can can bury the rod right into the puddle and it doesnt snuff out..infact I once had to weld on some steel that was the thickness of a dust pan, even though this is a 240 volt unit I put 120 volts to it, I lost the high end of the machine but shifted the output way down and I could weld on the thinest of material...........Great machines, I have to say the best I own not a single cct board in it, works on the principle of a mag amp, emp, cme..bring it..I will still be welding...a miller thunderbolt (older units) 230 amp ac output and 150 dc output, is also a good one and that too you can run on 120vac even though it say's 240 vac.
For engine drives nothing beats a old miller bobcat 250, no cct boards in it, just a idle control module, and when they fail the unit just goes to high idle and you can keep on welding. I think they also were rated for 7000, 8000 or so aux output but under the top cover is a resistor with a sliding contact that you can move to increase rotor current and that unit can then do 10,000 watts..
If Denob ever get around to fixing the picture posting on this board I will show you the best use for a princess auto mig welder, in fact I have just finished up testing it this week, it will never weld again but thats for the best..
Give a man a gun, and he can rob a bank. Give a man a bank, and he can rob the world.
