Yeah, two honey posts in one day...
I discovered Manuka honey a week ago. Dentist gave me 10 days of antibiotics to silence a nasty infected toothache until surgery. Still a month to go though so I started looking for an alternative.
Turns out Manuka honey is a very potent antibiotic (depending on the stuff you get). And it may even kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria. For a prepper this has obvious benefits.
The best stuff I've found locally is called "Manuka Health". They're not certified, but they seem to be stand up. I've also seen Wedderspoon brand around BUT there is serious question as to the quality of it. It might taste fine but it may not kill bacteria as effectively.
Anyway, look into it.
Thought I'd bump this old thread of mine under the circumstances. To start with, Ebola is a virus not a bacteria, so most of the studies of Manuka's effect on bacteria are worth squat at the moment.
There is some flimsy but encouraging evidence that it kills viruses too though. I mention it because there's no anti-Ebola pill that you can stock up on. A maybe cure is better than nothing.
Manuka honey is still worthy of consideration since it has been found effective against antibiotic resistant bacterial infections .
I have been using manuka honey for about three years... Hmmm... Come to think of it, I haven't had a cold or flu in three years. And considering, I do not get adequate sleep or sometimes proper nutrition. Perhaps that may be one of the things that contributed. I will back manuka any day.
I was eating it too until I learned the value of it applied topically to wounds in the example of a wound vulnerable to an antibiotic resistant bacterial infection. Now I save a jar for that application. Climate wise there are areas such as the pacific coast where manuka might be able to be grown for production on a small scale . Seeds are available through Richters Herbs in Canada .
