Hi all,
Like probably more than a few members, I'm carrying around extra weight that could significantly effect my survival chances. Looking to shed that weight, what effective workouts/routines have you guys found that produce solid results? Keeping in mind I work 8-10 hours a day between work and school, I've too long used the excuse as a reason not to work out, and really need to improve my health.
It's all about Diet AND exercise. YOu have to have an honest look at what you put in your mouth (and how much) and what you do to be active EVERY DAY. I was never concerned in my 20's about my health. By the time I turned 30 I had gained 20 pounds and ate like crap. since then I have been working towards re-learning how to eat properly and portion control. Once I got better at that (and lost 10pounds) I started looking at getting serious with my exercise. I don't think you need to hurt yourself when you exercise. That's just plain silly. Start with a half hour walk after work/before work/lunch break, take the stairs. Make that part of your daily routine. Look at activities that you enjoy and do more of those, bike riding, running, whatever. for me it's Kickboxing and running. Give yourself exercise goals and when you reach them set new ones. You don't have to spend a dime on being more active. look at what you have around you and get out there and do it! Drink lots of water every day! (i'm still working on this one, I never drank ANY water, my skin is happier for it and you can better flush toxins from your body) When they say you need to do a lifestyle change they really mean it. You cannot continue to be a couch potato or a fast food fan and lose the weight.
I use a fitbit force and an app called myfitnesspal to help me keep track of my progress and what I put in my face. They also sync together so I don't have to put in info twice. Love them!
Love snack food like I do? find alternatives! Cheecha puffs are low in calories and satifies my potato chip cravings. I also LOVE popcorn. I do cheat and eat/drink what I like once a week. If you have more good days than bad you will still see a change. Cook at home more often! Don't have time to cook? Make extra meals on your slow days that you can freeze. The majority of low calorie fast food menu options are still half of your daily calorie intake (even the salads!)
And my last piece of advice is be kind to yourself, it takes time for something to become a habit. You are going to have good days and bad days (or for me bad weeks). Just don't throw in the towel, keep working on it. It took 6 month for me to lose the first 10 pounds and another year for me to lose 5 pounds. If you are looking to just lose weight you will lose it but it will come back. You have to change the way you live your life and the weight will follow. It really will! I'm not spewing crap from my orifice! I swear! These are all the things that I have found to work for me, and I am still a work in progress.
GOOD LUCK!
I have been on a high carb, low fat, mostly raw, vegan diet for a little over a month now. Basically I eat completely raw fruits and vegatables all day until 4 o'clock when I cook up a vegan meal. Since eating this way, I have lost so much inflammation in my joints, which has allowed me to exercise more and do a wider range of exercising too. I won't eat like this forever (because I really like meat and eggs and the like) but this is sort of like a kick start/cleanse to get me going. Plus I love how there is no calorie restriction! Just pure healthy eating and as much as you care for!! It is also VERY fast food! It doesn't take that much time to throw a bunch of bananas or any other fruit you like in a bag and go!
I agree with Girlcancan. It's a lifetsyle change and every small decission we make adds to our success! Like taking the stairs instead of the elevator! I was getting stressed out about not being able to make it to a gym, but a gym is NOT needed! Use the outdoors as your playground! For example: my very young son wanted to play at a splash pad, so instead of me just sitting there and watching him play, I used the round spash pad as a track and jogged around it, did lunges around it etc. I find that conditioning myself to DO SOMETHING if I find myself sitting helps too! If I have time to sit on my butt I have time for some push ups or lunges or squatts or even a walk! Every bit helps! Good luck everyone! 🙂
Ya know.. 'cause girls need paracord too!
I looked at the Paleo diet and it made sense. At the time I was probably 40lbs overweight.
A couple of years ago I started it, not 100% but as much as I could. 20 lbs fell off in a couple of months, another 10 since then. I've seen the stuff in The Paleo Diet Solution by Robb Wolf and that doesn't make as much sense as the recommendations by the Weston A. Price Foundation dietary principles. Robb Wolf says only lean meats. Ancient peoples placed the highest priority on animal fats and organs.
Anyway, after a couple of years and only improving health and fitness to show for it I'm a believer. The weight has stayed off, I enjoy eating, I don't get urgent hunger pangs or sugar (carb) roller coaster rides anymore, period.
I've wrestled with my weight forever and finally after I'm 50 I found what works for me and it was effortless.
I recently went through The Great Cholesterol Myth(on sale audiobook). Pretty much illustrates that the science behind the Weston A. Price diet is solid.
I encourage anyone looking to eat better, feel better and be more fit to look into it.
I've been vegetarian my whole life, never weighed more than 155 lbs, but 2-3 times a month I still have a binge weekends that includes an indian buffet, 2 large pizzas, a family size pack of Doritos, a tub of ice cream with butterscotch syrup, lots of french fries, nachos with cheese and a lot of candy.
