I just found out that most, but not all, ornamental poppies are opium poppies. If this shocks the sh-- out of you, well welcome to the crowd! If you doubt me, look it up! Anyways, this could provide a natural pain killer. What I'm wondering, if you had to have a tooth pulled, could you take some of this ahead of time & prepare yourself, or would it make you goofy and unpredictable and therefore make any potentially painful procedure more dangerous? Also alcohol, would a few drinks help prevent the pain or make you an unmanageable patient?
Also wondering if these would be a good painkillers for animals, most especially dogs. Does anyone know?

Do you really want to play with poppies?

Russell Coight....outback legend
Whte poppies are the opium based poppies. Hertz found this out when the birds (Budgies and such) were singing upside down in the cages after eating birdseed with white poppy seed. The FDA and the drug squad confincated the batch so that people would not grow it.

ranger, you need to do more homework. There are white opium poppies, but there are many, many, many others. Most of the ones that people have in their gardens are opium poppies. Do your homework and you'll find out I'm right.
I guess it depend on how much pain you want to kill.
I apologize for my ignorance. I stand corrected. I have spouted something that I had read but not investigated thoroughly. Damn, and to think, my mum had a large patch of these things.

I'm so slow about follow up, so didn't notice your apology til now Ranger -which isn't necessary at all. I have a big fear of dental pain and want to be prepared for any eventuality... However I sure don't want to cause any opium addiction in myself, or anyone else for that matter...
I'm thinking that if everything crashes long term, then eventually we run out of stored meds, or they become impotent. So, here's a possible painkiller we can grow.
My Granny grew the big orange poppies, which I believe are called oriental poppies, interestingly they are not opium poppies. Another interesting thing is that the poppy seed we get in muffins and rolls comes from opium poppies and that is the reason why these things are not to be consumed before a drug test, I had this confirmed very recently by a nurse.
I'm thinking about trying to spout some of my baking poppyseed if I don't get around to ordering other seed.

We find neomagnets act as great pain relief for us and our animals when needed. We have a few for us, and also dog collars and wool underlay bedding with the magnets in them.
willow bark is a natural pain remedy,
but more of the aspirin type chronic relief
(can also be used to make your own rooting hormone for propagation)
for true dental pain, opiates will relieve serious acute & chronic pain,
you will not become 'goofy', more mellow
(it is also beneficial for constipation, relaxes the tension and allows things to flow)
if you have an addictive personality then maybe its use should be highly regulated,
ie emergencies only
if you are in canada,
check richter's herbs/seeds
they list the opium poppy in the catalog, but not on their website
so maybe they stopped carrying them?

grace, the neomagnets sound a bit new agey, but I'll look them up...
Got freedom, I used to have some willowtabs and once tried them, to no avail... I was able to find the poppies from anothere supplier, they aren't hard to get and come in an array of colors. I'd hate to get addicted so I have mixed feelings, but whenever I think of dental pain, I think I wanna have some on hand.

Hehe, yes they probably do to the uninitiated martha 🙂 I had quite a good toothache a week ago, Colloidal Silver and Neomagets for a couple of days...infection, pain, & gum swelling all gone 😀
Re-Activated Charcoal tablets or capsules & Hypericum (St Johns Wort) are also very good for teeth/gum infections. Charcoal absorbs the toxins & bacteria produced by infection, and St John's relieves nerve pain in all parts of the body. Just a few alternatives for you to ponder... 😉
Opiates can become very addictive, so use with great caution.
the absolute best remedy for any tooth infection (even severely impacted) is garlic
simply peel a garlic clove, cut a small piece and let it sit for 10 minutes (allows a reaction to take place)
then place in the tooth or between the cheek and gum, and let it sit for 30-30 minutes
spit that piece out, and replace with a new piece
relief will come by the first or second piece,
but continue for a day or two until you feel infection is gone

I have always found direct application of Clove Oil to be able to numb up dental pain. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_of_cloves
The stuff I have is REALLY REALLY REALLY old and still works so I don't think shelf life is a major concern. If you have them, just grab a whole clove and place it in your mouth for an extended period. The numbing effect ought to become quite clear in a few minutes.

I recently tried Lawang Oil and it worked really really well on muscle pain, I had an orchestra practice on and the muscles across my shoulders and into my neck were really sore and I could hardly hold up my violin. The lovely lady in the health food store rubbed it into my shoulders and neck and within 10 minutes I felt much better and was able to sit and play right through the 4 hour practice.
😆 (Caution this would be considered quackery and unproven scientifically...hope that satisfies the critics) 🙄
