Not a lovely topic, I know.

Mom has taken a turn for the worse in the last week. Her kidneys have started to fail (as well as going blind, bed sores, etc). One of the biggest things that I have noticed going into her room is the smell. The hospice keeps the rooms very clean. They make sure that mom is clean & her catheter is emptied often.

I guess the smell is her body dying but it is enough to just about knock me on my a$$. The smell started at the same time her kidneys failed (Tuesday). Not sure if it is because the kidneys are bleeding but the smell was not there on Monday.

Anyone know how to reduce the smell in a fragrance free building?

I've never tried one personally, but I hear that the Air Sponge works well.

Oldschool,

First, thoughts and prayers to you and yours during this period. I would suggest you discuss this with the hospice staff as they may have solutions but just didn't notice that the smell was offensive (they are more immune to it). Ensure that your mother receives all the hygiene care possible, for the family and also her dignity.

If despite all this, you still cannot bear the smell, I may have a trick for you. I'm my old days of being a paramedic, I always carried a small jar of Vicks Vaporub in my bag. A little dab under your nose works well to overpower and mask all other smells. It worked for me for short periods (10-15 mins) but I don't know how well it would work for longer periods.

Regards

That smell is probably the toxins that have built up in the body releasing through the pores. There is nothing to filter them anymore. Like Helico said, vapour rub does work, i used that trick in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina doing relief work. Remember her in the good times, healthy and all and that she will be healthy again in the next chapter of her journey. Don't let the current situation be the dominant memories. I wish for the best for you and your family.

Thanks all

I will try the vicks when I go tonight. It wasn't until you said it that I remember that "trick" from the movies. I know in the old days they used to use posies but didn't think I could get way with that one. I will try putting a few of the air sponges under her bed as well. I would hate for my nieces to have to deal with the smell.
