Hello all...Just thought I'd pop in and say "Hi"
I'm not exactly new to being a Prepper but I am woefully behind on making it a true reality.
I believe every family should have a 6 month supply of foods and consumables if only because any of us can experience a job loss or injury that prevents us from providing for our family.
Presently I feel I'm about half way there towards a 6 month supply on hand to support 5 adults.
I would like to ask the group for some reading suggestions on the following topics ...food storage, making the most of small space gardening, basic micro scale animal keeping (chickens/rabbits) and a basic book on general preparedness. I really would appreciate some reading lists of books that the library/amazon.ca might have available for reasonable cost.
I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, tinned fruit, 10 bags of oatmeal, sugar, tea, baked beans, tins of nuts, peanut butter, 2 huge bags of rice, a case of spaghetti sauce and the weary looking husband ~ Debbie

Hey there Ratdogmom, welcome to the forum. I just finished a great book on square foot gardening. I will see if I can find you the link for it as it is too large to email...60 + mb, but a great read.
As for small scale chickens, Anitapreciouspearl started a great thread about it and is willing to answer all your questions.
I'll be in touch.
Here is a link to that SFG book...
Denob, for some reason I couldn't access that link.
Until you do what you believe in, you don't know if you believe in it or not.

Sorry folks...I messed up on the sharing option...try again.

I have the Square Foot Gardening book, I guess I should dig it out and re read it. One summer I grew enough mustartd greens to feed our family of 5 from July through to the first killing frost, and fill the freezer on a patch that was about 3' x 4'.
My chicken dreams died this week...my city banned chickens last Wednesday.

I though that was you in front of me, i always pick the wrong line, lol
Welcome ratdogmom, nice name as well.
I have 3 American Rat Terriers and a Jack Russel 😀 I am truly a ratdogmom!
My husband gets a teeny bit miffed sometimes but he's seen the benefits when he was off work for a month several years ago. I literally had $5 in my wallet but, we had enough in the fruit cellar room and freezer to see us through it. Another time he was off on Workers Comp because of a hernia...sick pay from his job worked out to about 60% of his wages when all was said and done. He was very glad of my food stashing then...and the TP stash.
He's the first one to suggest 2 or 3 case of salmon or tuna when we see it at a loss leader price. I think I've got him trained now 😉 ...now I have to tell him "no" on some things because I know we don't eat it up quick enough or the dates aren't long enough on the sale stock for my liking.
I've started cleaning and inventorying my fruit cellar today...I gotta do better on the fruits and veg and baking supplies and a few more varieties of canned proteins wouldn't go amiss.

welcome and chime on in, you sound like you have a good head on your shoulders. I envy you, you got your husband on board, I could not even get my ex wife to agree to stock up some water.
welcome welcome welcome
OMG Debbie - nice to meet you!
I'm the lady beside you in the line up, talking your ear off about the price of the tuna in your grocery cart, and how much coffee costs these days, and where do you find the best coupons for that tuna!!
So glad to meet someone who is real and honest! Good for you!
They may laugh and cringe at us now... but it's us tuna stocking up mommas who will drag the rest of the herd through this thing. And, a full belly is a happy belly.
Nice to meet you Debbie. You go girl!
The sky is falling! The sky is falling! Or, it's just a freakin' apple!
Welcome, A good solid basic book that has many of the things you seem to be looking for would be the backyard homestead, edited by carleen madigan, its a very solid starter book covering all area's of a homestead, it has reasonable detail on the basic's but does not go into great depth for which you would need a book just on each subject.
