My name is Dale, I am very interested in being prepared for whatever emergency or disaster that comes along. I appreciate all the information and tips that can be found in the posts. I watch doomsday preppers on Ntl. geographic on TV and I've noticed they store some food stuffs in plastic 2 litre pop bottles. Why not original packaging?
Thank you all.

Hey cattrax, welcome to the forum.
As for the pop bottles, much of the original packaging for food simply doesn't stand up to long term storage that well.
A good example is the plastic bags that rice often comes in.
These bags are not air tight and are easy to poke holes in.
Although I don't use pop bottles for food, they will offer a better resistance to punctures and give a much better, although not perfect seal against air.
Air, specifically oxygen, is the enemy of long term food storage as living things such as mold, insects, etc, depend on it.
Removing air and protecting against it will help your food last much longer.
Great question...keep 'em coming!

Hello Dale...& welcome! Air, heat & light are what destroys your food storage so you need to avoid those. I know you will find the information you need here.
