Please introduce yourself to our other members here.

Hi everyone...I am a newbee to this Site. I have been prepping for years after a number of dreams I had years ago. I am in southwest Manitoba. Wondering if anyone is around me?

Hello everyone
My wife and I have been interested in preparedness and sustainable living for awhile now and have been researching and experimenting as best as we can. I never learned how to hunt or fish as a young man so I'm slowly trying to learn now. We have been trying to modify our little urban lot into a make-shift little homestead here in Langford (Victoria BC). We have 9 chickens - a small rabbitry - raised gardens and a greenhouse. Its amazing what is possible on a tiny little 1/8 acre lot. I am approaching my compulsory retirement age with the Navy (55) and our dream is to somehow find a decent acreage we could actually afford on my small military pension. I am a naval marine engineer (artificer) who also is a first aid instructor, Light Urban Search and Rescue instructor (earthquake and disaster response) and a civilian scuba dive instructor (although I've not taught diving in a few years now).
My wife is an artist and may not have a strong professional resume but I thinks she's a heck of a lot smarter and capable than I ever will be - she successfully managed to hold the family together while I was away at sea for month at a time.

Well, here we go.
Id like to first of all say hello out there, to all you preppers and mention that it was very difficult for me to join this group or any group for that matter as this is way out for me, and this is also the first time ive ever joined any chat group on the internet so please bear with me, Im not really sure where this is going for me.
I have been educating my over the years as to the economical situation approaching us all and without saying the sky is falling want to do something about it to ensure my family is taken care of. If were all wrong so be it, if were right at least I wont expect someone else to tell me what to do or expect the government to come to my assistance when we all know that when "s--- hits the fan" its gonna be prepared groups of like minded individuals who have carefully planned out these scenarios that will have the best chance of getting through these times. Im sure some of you can relate, most people have no idea of whats happening in the world outside of the city they live in. With all the chaos in the world today and with the unsure road ahead of us all, im interested in like minded individuals who truly wish to discuss, share, work together, contribute something real and be a part of a social group with similar interests, maybe make a few friends while doing it and not to have that uneasy feeling of being the only one that see's the reality approaching.

Salutations!

First, I can relate to Prepperguy1; I was reluctant to register to a site of this nature as the media perspective involves a bit of tinfoil. However, I feel doing so will result in learning some important things, as well as avoiding some costly mistakes. I'm not likely to post often, but will visit frequently to keep up on topics. I doubt I'll ever consider myself a 'prepper' but have a mindset for emergency preparedness.

Before the June flooding I can't say I've ever been in a shtf scenario, but I've had enough minor events to make me want to be better prepared for emergencies. For the most part this has meant vehicle breakdowns in the middle of nowhere in bad weather (-30C), but has also included power outages, minor household floods, near-misses or concern about larger floods, forest fires & bears. My apartment building was ordered a mandatory evacuation during the June flooding, but I saw it coming and my wife & I were prepared to evac. We were also lucky that the building didn't suffer any damage/property losses other than a blown transformer.

In August I ran a 'Lunch & Learn' session at my company for evacuation preparedness and related basics. 10 people came and I think I reached a few of them...hopefully they will prepare an evacuation bag, but according to CDN Red Cross stats, only 40% of people have done so.

My vehicle's emergency kit has evolved to be a large tupperware kit++, missing only a fire extinguisher at this point. While some think my vehicle kit is excessive, I don't think they've been 'there' yet. The high school grads I helped the other month were a mix of surprised & grateful when I used my air compressor to inflate their truck's emergency donut from 35 to the needed 60psi. =) I must say I'm a bit disturbed by how totally unprepared many drivers are, especially in winter.

Other than developing my vehicle kit well, I can't say that I'm otherwise that 'prepared'. I've been doing a fair bit of reading in the last couple years however, to get a better understanding of what 'prepared' means:
-Les Stroud's 'Survive!' and 'Will to Live'
-The SAS Survival Handbook
-Cody Lundin's 'When All Hell Breaks Loose'
-The Unthinkable by Amanda Ripley
-Your forum and bits of others

Other than that I enjoy camping, hiking, snowshoeing, canoeing, etc., and have made 3 igloos each winter for the last two seasons with the Icebox igloo making tool. After the June flooding & my L&L session I now have an evacuation bag set up and plan to maintain & improve on it, and plan to build small packages of items at work as well; I only received the evacuation notice by fluke..!

Might is Right is the wrong thing to say but the right thing to understand.

Hi Seren1ty,
first of all, welcome to the forum. There are lots of great people here ready to help.
Secondly, I understand your obsession. Just remember, you can't do it all at once. Relax, breathe, and take it one step at a time.
Here are two podcasts I recommend for you to listen to. It's Jack Spirko, host of The Survival Podcast.
Have a listen, I am sure they will help.

Hi, new here but been living a certain lifestyle for 30+ years and more active in a larger preparedness scheme for several years. I'm a chick, was an American jarhead with overseas experience, and face the unique challenges of preparedness for animals as well as with somewhat more limited physical abilities than the average Joe and with family and friends who have medical conditions.
Thanks,
-P
