Howdy from Ottawa!

Also not a real prepper, just a fascinated civilian. I'm a big fan of dystopian novels, movies, tv. So that's why I'm here. Also though this might be a new and interesting hobby to get into. I'd say the extent of my preparedness is having a small cache of long term storage food in my cupboard (pasta, rice, beans, canned stuff), and a pocket knife.

😀

Hello,

My name is Jennifer, and I am very new to the scene. I haven't started prepping yet, mostly because I am on disability and it is difficult to support my family already, lol! I would like to begin preparing, so I've begun by doing research. My plan is to build my knowledge base as much as possible first, and gather what information I can (survival strategies, first aid/medical info, basic farming and water purification instructions, and the like).

It is my hope that by doing this, I will be able to prioritize my needs when it comes down to actually purchasing things. Any tips or resources you may know of (i.e. websites or downloadable content) would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you! Happy prepping!

Jenn

Welcome!
Jenn, there is a lot you can do that don't involve buying things 🙂 Preppers are very resourceful folks. I don't know which aspects you're focussing most, on, but most prep blogs will have articles on "frugal" gardening, cooking, etc, like http://foodstorageandsurvival.com/25-ways-to-prepare-free/ . You are on the right track to start with skills rather than stuff. I find they all take a little more time, but you are not working that this is probably a worthwhile tradeoff 🙂 Consider making use of library books, videos, etc. Also, if you volunteer your time, many places will teach you skills for free - i.e. first aid, animal care, etc. Also, look at what you currently throw out to see if you can reuse for cooking, gardening, first aid, etc. Save eggshells & banana peels for the garden, and seafood trimmings to make stock. Consider some barter. I work full-time, but I hate waste & extra chemicals and I am the ultimate cheapskate, so I make my own cleaning products, soap, wine, and some personal care products. There are tons of books and website with recipes on what staples you can make instead of buy, like crackers, bread, etc - saves money but also a skill to have, since in the future we may not always be able to run to a grocery store. Happy prepping!

Hi Jenn,

Any tips or resources you may know of (i.e. websites or downloadable content) would be greatly appreciated!

Hope is right, there are many things one can do. 🙂

You can get free books from amazon thru a site that makes a list and sends you that list each day. DailyFreeBooks.com
When see a book you want to DL, it will be for Amazon.com so you just have to change the .com to: .CA in your browser.
Did that make sense or was it clear as mud? 😆

They some pretty good books on prepping, also growing in containers ( for those that don't have a garden) and much more that you might find helpful.

If you don't have a kindle, no problem. All you have to do is DL the app at Amazon.ca for your computer. I believe they have other apps for other applications as well.
All is free.

There are other things you can do to get you started in a very slow way but in the end it really does add up.
Only you know if you can do this. Some ppl when they buy cans for the month's shopping, they add one more can to it. That can gets put away.
That's just an idea that you can do with pretty well anything if you have storage space.
Best to buy/put away stuff you normally eat/use.

Good luck on your journey to being prepped. 🙂

A sense of humor is absolutely essential to survival.

Greetings from BC!

Completely brand new to prepping. I've got about 3 cans of food and some string so far in my kit. Going strong! 😀

@Esteldin National Capital Region (NCR) is Ottawa (Ontario) and Gatineau (Quebec). I live on the Quebec side just outside Gatineau and Work on the Ontario side (Ottawa) It is easier for me to meet people from Ottawa than Montreal.

@HopeImready I work in downtown Ottawa. If you are near centeror downtown, we could grab a cup of coffee someday. 🙂

Hi all

I'm new to the forum and even fairly new to Canada. Losing Electricity during the Winter was definately a uh-oh moment for me. I'd never really thought about what I was going to do if the Grid went down.

So just spent my first winter in Canada, from Australia and am living in Ontario(Ottawa). Loving it so far 🙂

Looking forward to reading through all the threads and meeting some preppers.

Cheers
Sya
