Hi everyone! (Bonjour pour ceux qui parlent francais!) I'm Kate.
Seems like the trend here for every newcomer to post their location in their title. While I'd like to do the same, I'm not quite settled yet, so it's harder to do.
I guess I'm somewhere between Montreal (Qc) and Ottawa (On). Lots of driving back and forth, although am currently sort of staying in Gatineau (Qc) for the next few months... So not really sure where I fit... Get my dilemma? 😛
In any case, I was googling some (read glued-to-my-computer-for-the-last-36hrs....) prepping stuff and ended up on this website and thought I'd join! Seems lively and very interesting/useful. It'd definitely be nice to be able to 'talk' to others about similar concerns and trade ideas and tips. Reading about what other people are doing or have found on this website makes it more 'real' for me. Maybe because it's closer to home (Canada)?
I guess I don't have an extensive survivalist/prepper background as many others who have posted here, but wished I was. This 'prepping' in case of a potential disaster and 'city girl' way of life have been very conflicting in the last few years and my BOB bag is... let's just say it's reflective of my ambivalence and completely unfinished. I'll say it's started, ever changing but never ready in case of a disaster. I did get through the IceStorm 1998 and the Toronto 72 hours blackout just fine, but I guess back then I was still young and only thought of it as a fun adventure in life, oblivious to "but what if this prolongs for much longer" or "what if this was a regular occurence"? Craftiness will only get me so far without some serious prepping for worst case scenarios... Especially, now, I am also responsible for the life of a little playful Shih Tzu and realized the other day, as a false fire alarm rang, that I didn't know what to grab for my dog... 🙁 So yeah... I look forward to meet with the community, learn and grow.

Welcome kate
Welcome Kate, 🙂
Especially, now, I am also responsible for the life of a little playful Shih Tzu and realized the other day, as a false fire alarm rang, that I didn't know what to grab for my dog.
I can tell you what I do for my dog.
I keep a light weight (doggie) bag in my car that changes with the seasons, as I would change mine.
The bag has straps that can loop into my backpack.
Summer
2 L pop bottle of water.
Small collapsible dish for water.
Wholesome treats.
Dry foods.
Extra leash ( in case anything happens to the one in car.)
Proof of her rabies shot.
Winter
All the above plus:
Blanket.
Sweater.
Yes and booties.
Never can tell where we get stuck in snow and deep freezing.
Weather up in the mtns can change so fast!
Nice to have something to wrap her in if staying put for awhile.
The sweater and booties if we have to walk out.
There's a lot of miles between me and the next town or phone and no cell towers around here.
So only option is to hope someone comes by that can get help, so I am prepared for that.
There is also food she can eat from my car bag that I put in extras.
OTG
A sense of humor is absolutely essential to survival.
