Shopping in the big city today, I view it like going to the zoo, I like to watch the animals but try to interact with them as little as possible. Best deal today was the Kraft Dinner. Price was 11.89 a case but the case was 12 big boxes, each individual box was 340g as opposed to the regular sized boxes at 225g a box. So that case= 18 regular size boxes of KD and that would work out to a price of 66 cents a regular box size. A very good deal.In fact just for fun I worked out the Calorie value and a regular box sized cooked is 960 calories. So for 66 cents you can buy nearly 1000 calories of energy. I use 3000 calories as what a man needs per day when working out food storage requirements. For those stocking up that was at the Costco on the south side of Edmonton.
I noticed the price of Honey is moving up, it was 13.99 for 3kgs 12-14 months ago, today I seen the price was 16.99. I cant eat the stuff as I must stay away from sugar, but I filled my cart as I have found a great use for it...Mead, This brand makes a really good tasting mead.
Alcohol production is just as important as food storage.

Cheap source of calories in an emergency inventory.
Side bar, noticed the honey, my dad always told me to tip the paint cans upside down to help keep out air. Logic being of course to have liquid Cover the seam and new block air. I do it with many of the bottles I have ( honey being one).jams, pickles....
Wondering if people have noticed a difference by doing that?
Stopped into costco today to do a bit of shopping. Filled two 20 lb propane tanks. $19.70. Very happy with that price. A 3 pack of one pounders would cost you that much at crappy tire

Yes, cheap and quick. Its definitely not a long term storage food, the elbow noodles may last forever but the cheese packs start to go bad somewhere around 4 to 5 years past the best before date on the box, or such has been my experience. If I find any in my stores past the 3 to 4 year mark they will become dog food.

The Costco instant potatoes is another good deal (14 dollars a box). I worked out the cost and it comes to 84 cents per 1000 calories cooked but you have to add the cost of milk and margarine to cook it, I estimate that to be 55 cents per 1000 calories so 1.39 per 1000 calories. Even if you like to use lots of margarine and milk I cant see it going above 1.50 per 1000 calories. Not bad for a product that stores forever.

At the zoo again today. Stocked up on some canned goods for a change.
So far even at its sale price of 1.74 per can, this is the most expense item I have bought lately when I worked out the cost per 1000 calories ($4.55).But you need to stock a little variety.
Of course as I look at the can I am wondering what they did with the rest of the chicken?

Costco today had 8 pounds of red lentils on sale for 6.48. Regular gas at 79 cents a liter.

92 a litre at my Costco. If I wanted it at 79 I would need a status card and a drive to local reserve. Non Native price is 89 cents. Would have to say lentils are our favourite meatless protein. Cheap and versatile.
Drove into the belly of the beast Monday for a little shopping and recon. Everywhere, every store had little traffic (by comparison to how a normal Dec would be). Costco had another brand of instant potatoes for sale, I think it was on for either 10.99 or 11.99 cant remember for sure. Honey had gone up. Its now at 19.00 for 3 kg.

I was just at Costco this morning, and yes, the honey was back up to 18.99. Interestingly enough, they were still limiting paper products to one per person. I really didn't think that toilet paper was still an issue!
BTW...we picked up that box of chicken noodle soup too!

I usually make my own soup from scratch, but damn, this soup was on sale for 9.99
