Asparagus Advice Wanted

We had some decent success with asparagus. We are thinking about putting in about 2 acres as a perennial trade crop. Here is my question. Will it grow well on a slope. We have an area that is too sloped for easy haying. Next, does it have to be fenced. It is a high deer traffic area. We haven't had problems in our fenced garden but I am not sure if the deer will go after it any amount worth worrying about. We would keep the weeds down using hay mulch. We will try from the seeds we collected this year. Any sagely advice out there?

I see no reason asparagus will not grow on a slope. Around here it grows wild in some places that are so steep that one needs to almost be a mountain goat to get to it. I'd go for it, and try some, anyway......it's just soooo good not to grow some, and is so pricey in the stores.

Asparagus is supposed to be deer resistant (resistant, not "proof") but I know for a fact that it depends on how desperate they are, which comes down to concentration, feed (rainfall affect + cultivation and exclusions), the duration of winter from its norm, and hunting pressure that may drive them out of some areas. Plus, if they're already accustomed to cruising through the area, they'll munch their way past.

What you really have to watch are the rabbits. Common brown hares love the stuff. And so do box turtles.
