Hi Goldie, Now that would be a lot of apple sauce, LOL I love my sauce, I use it in baking, we eat a lot and hubby takes it for snack's at work, I use it for making horse treats and so forth but no, I meant assorted Canning 🙂
I do keep the lids on, I have read the same as you and yes, now that I live in Ontario with our humid summers, I deal with rust, unlike in alberta or NWT where I no issues with rust, our lids would last years and years, I know they are not as pretty here but I get as many years as possible out of it.. because I do run a dehumidifier in the cellar all summer long, certainly something to worry about..
I will probably be getting rid of all my rusty rings, some of them are over very old, they are those gold coloured ones . LOL
Here are my ham radio antennas up on the roof. The "tower" is simply a piece of 1 x 3 screwed to the facia.
This is the 2 meter antenna I mentioned here...

the 4 radials are about 20" long, angled down at about 45 deg. and help reflect the signal back up to the radiator, which is difficult to see because I used the bare ground wire from some standard household wire. It started at 20" and was trimmed until my SWR was at 1:1.1.
This is the 20 meter dipole. The Balun is about 20' of RG8U coiled around a scrap piece of 4" ABS. Each radiator is made of 16 g. speaker wire.
They started at about 17 feet each and were trimmed until I hit an SWR of 1:1.3 on 14.200MHZ.
The piece of white PVC pipe lying on the roof is my CB antenna. I took it down to make room for the others, and will have to mount it somewhere soon.
Here are the HF rig...Yaesu FT-7B 80 - 10 meter 50 watts sitting on top of the 40 channel CB.
The Ham radio with the dipole antenna gets good contacts as far away as California and the CB is for local comms to the cars, which have mobiles.
This is the Baofeg UV-5R, connected to the outdoor antenna...currently listening to the local Provincial Police. I can also hit a repeater about 70 KM away with a clear signal.
Yes, Che, that is my tickle trunk 🙂 Willed to me by my aunt, with about a 1000 old slides inside. Finally went through all the 50-yr old slides & was able to repurpose the trunk. Disguised currently as a foyer bench/cat sun-bed. Love the pic of Scruffles - too cute.
Great thread - people are so ingenious!

So this too works on the same principle as the aircraft antenna. But instead of one insulated line, you have 4 running in opposing directions? I now followed the link you presented earlier. That is a good link! Thanks.

Nice setup (impressed). Love the old school Yaesu - just the basics and reliable. I don't have one but have heard good things about it.
....I do what I call my mobile health kits, they are just what they sound like. tool box's that have the basic's added to them to cover all kinds of typical things that can happen, I have a human one, a small critter one (think Cats/Dogs) a large animal kit, and a barn birthing kit.. They are awesome because I just need to tell hubby which kit to bring me and Go!
Most preppers don't have larger, farm animals to take care of, however, I'm sure there's a large number that have pets (cats/dogs). I'd bet it's safe to say that a lot of them haven't even considered such a kit for their animal let alone a shoulder-bag/backpack for them to carry as HopeImReady posted. Nice.
I'd love to see more preppers posting pics 🙂

Many items you would employ in animals first aid have uses for humans too because as much as it is hard to wrap our heads around, we are animals . Most veterinary drugs are also used in human grade treatments as well. Never a bad idea to consider a good vet ( as in veterinarian) as one of the most valuable assets around used to dealing with trauma in a field setting .
Is that a Faraday cage made from a garbage can? Cool...How did you do that? I thought the cages were made from a special material?....

Someone posted a youtube link wayyyyyy back in the day here how to make one from a garbage can. Mine is a bit different, I used SM Board on the interior then sprayed it with a black rubber non conductive coating. But here is the link I modeled it after:

Very cool. Love the aluminum tape. That's exactly what I have as well (right around the rim). Rubber coating spray? That's smart thinking. I used a thick foam pad myself.

From my understanding it's anything that is enclosed and conductive. Certain materials work better as conductive materials then others but at the same time cost much more. An aluminum trash can seems to be the standard these days where prepper faraday cages are concerned for the obvious reasons of being cheap, abundant and a decent size. I suspect the magnitude of the EMP and conductive material used would have an impact on it's effectiveness. This is to say that XX amount of induced voltage may mean everything is safe for any enclosure yet XXXXX amount of induced voltage may overwhelm an enclosure that is made of tin (while aluminum enclosures are fine) - however, I have not confirmed this yet.
I'm a visual person. Who cares to post some more pics?? This is fun...

I have a new hugel bed on the go.
The logs are 2' diameter and well rotted already. Should be about 60' long when finished. Still have to clear out the rest of the standing cedars.
Left side is done and I'm working right as materials and time permit. It's a bit close to the pond in the center so I laid the 2 cedar logs in to retain the soil and leave enough room for the ATV to pass by.
Here is my first attempt at a survival tin - The actual tin I bought was too small, so currently I've got things rolled into a bandana , plus separately in my bag, I usually carry a first aid pouch (mouth mask, bandaids, latex glove) and a tactical pen (indestructible w/glass breaker tip)
Contents are:
mirror
credit card multi-tool
mini lighter
moleskin & some bandaids
cotton fluff
mini compass
2 water purification tablets
Vit B insect repellant patch
2 travel wipes
paracord
paracord lanyard w/extra key, whistle, mini flashlight
sewing kit w/needle + dental floss
carabiner
bandana
p.s.my foster kitty was trying to help 😉
