This is a a really great workout routine which I use and thought you might enjoy. It is not all I do but is a slightly scaled down version. Forget about TBH (trained by Hollywood) b.s. I'm a vet so I've been in the the thick and can say that this truly is a good preppers workout.
One day a week leave your house and walk as fast as possible for 7 minutes away, turn around and come back on the same route back home. Speed walking is what you should be doing here, as fast as you can go.
Once a week put your BOB on and go walk 10, 20 or more kilometers. Include 4-6 liters of water to pack.
Every 7-10 days depending on how you feel physically do a Tabata protocol. 1 min sprint at 90-95% followed by 30 sec rest and repeat 6-8 times
One day a week do a 5 k run. Keep your pulse at less then 65% of max the whole time.
5 or 6 days a week do "Grease the groove" pull up bar training and ab work
One day a week go to Toronto zoo and wrestler the alligators.....cause your capable of it now if you do this workout. Enjoy.
p.s. I throw in kettle bell swings, Turkish get ups, Romanian single legs cross lifts as well for a few min twice a week.
Thats some serious working out.
I've gotta say im not the healthiest person and i need to loose a good amount of weight. (im not to the point where i cant do things because of my weight)... i just need to get it off.. i do have a membership to a gym but im just wondering if you might have any tips and how to get off this weight so im more safe when SHFT.
I'm in the same boat as nyy-tegan. Any suggestions would be great.
No matter what t.v. has to say, 80% of your weight problem is what goes in your mouth and I really mean it. It takes a huge amount of time and effort just to burn a pound of fat off your body. If your really serious go to the library and get Tim ferris book the four hour body. Easy to follow and others who I suggested it to have easily lost 15-20 in a month or so. Here come the naysayers but ignore them. Hell go on his blog and do some reading tonight. The book with blow you away. Hope this helps you.
I'm not a health guru (anymore - used to be in my youth), but I'd really have to say that 80% of weight management is really having the motivation and keeping the commitment to exercise.
It's easy these days to find the programs...but none of them work at all if one keeps saying they'll "start tomorrow".
I really strongly believe too, that paying for a gym membership is tossing money (sorry, I know it seems a good idea when you do it). Walking is still free (for now), running is free. Your own bodyweight is exactly the right amount. I firmly believe in training in all weather as well, as a survival-minded person one can appreciate that disasters or SHTF won't be at all limited to indoors 😉
I really strongly believe that saving the money but investing in finding partner(s) to exercise with is much much more rewarding. They help you, and you them, get and stay motivated to do it. It's a rare case when one's on self-discipline starts them and keeps them moving, and speaking as one of the guilty at my current age am I right?
Runs With Scissors
Runswithscissors is a very smart fellow or gal.....I second what they say as well. 🙂
Don't know about the smart fellow (yep, fully male) part. I am known for my bluntness, although many say it's more a character flaw then a admiral trait.
Runs With Scissors
Systema.
Are you training in Russian Systema? I'm a practitioner of Krav Maga, and have looked into Systema. I believe there is training in Georgetown near me. If your the Russsian Systema I'm thinking of! 🙂
My two cents, for what its worth. Everything I'm hearing here sounds pretty common sense and right. I just want to add that if your getting into any physical exercise, don't go nuts to start out. Starting off 1 or 2 times a week for shorter durations you will probably have better luck staying with it, than trying to jump it full blast and losing motivation right away. I am a Triathlete and you would be surprised how little it takes to get started, and then slowly adding incrementally to your workouts. Whatever it is, take your time. You don't need to jump on the P90X or Crossfit bandwagon and go nuts. what Systema is recommending has some really great stuff in it. Getting out, no matter what..is better than nothing! I second his frustration with hollywood fads, etc. that seem to reinvent themselves all the time...

Eat healthier. Can any fast food. HIgher protein meals...that doesnt' mean cutting out carbs altogether though! Just make some small changes over time. Pick up that turkey minced meat in lieu of the hamburger meat for burgers or pasta sauce. Look at different choices. Bigger breakfast and Lunch. Smaller dinners. Try not to eat after 8pm unless your working nights! 🙂
Moving burns calories. Sedentary lifestyle doesn't. Find an activity you like thats active and do it. For some people that is a walk. Others may find it boring. But whether its swimming, walking, maybe dancing, hiking, working on a new deck, gardening, squash, whatever....the point is get moving. Sitting on a stationary bike or treadmill may be boring, and if it's boring, you won't stick with it. But if you find something you like, your more apt to keep doing it in the long term.
Good luck! You have to find whats fun and interesting to you. If it's a chore..chances are you just don't follow through. Thats my experience! 🙂

Thank you,
Yeah I've started eating healthier (as of yesterday) fruits, veggies, meat, and minimal carbs (because sometimes you just need that yummy carb at a meal) I haven't gotten back into the gym yet but i need to start. i will probly do several things there but i think the treadmill will be nice during the winter. (don't have to be cold, no excuse not to go). not sure how many people are in the same boat as me but i would love to talk and learn from one another. also.. I know sometimes for me a competition can be a fun motive. Would anyone be interested?
Don't be afraid of carbs. I eat them near exclusively. Think about this for a bit. A cup of cooked rice = a little over 200 calories. Don't know about you but I'm a large muscular male and I would have a devil of a time eating more then a few cups in a day along with other foods as part of my meals. I have a hell of a time trying to gain weight when I eat mostly starch based carbs and little meat and fats. Really. Don't get me wrong I eat meat and fats from time to time like most every caveman I know. Make changes slowly, monitor results closely, don't listen too much to others cause they usually have no idea, and find what works best for you and what is easy for you to follow and be healthy. My body melts down and dies when I eat hardly any whole grains. Canada's food police says they make me healthy. Does not work for me.
