I am looking into raising chickens and can't seem to find any good resources about where you can and can't have them. I have looked into the london bylaws and of course you can't have them ( no surprise there) but i am looking to move outside the city in the near future and can't seem to find anything on having them. I am assuming that outside the city limits you are pretty free, but we all know what happens when you assume. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated, thanks

My suggestion is wherever you plan to move, call town hall first, they'll tell you what you can and can't do (on your own property.) Don't forget that rules can always be bent, or broken.

your favorite new website will be www.backyardchickens.com - everything you ever wanted to know about urban and country backyard chickens. You can also find a quick answer to bylaws in your area because there will most certainly be someone there who knows!

Bylaws are enforced by complaint. I talked with my neighbours and they love having eggs every once and a while, especially 'city fresh' eggs. The coop is hidden, and cleaned regularly so no one has to smell it. The Gulls, geese, neighbours dogs, et.al. cover up the sounds when I let them out into my greenhouse. I clean the coop right into one of two compost bins and get a very hot (need to water daily) bin, thus no smell. No one is harmed, and it benefits my neighbourhood and my family...what's wrong with that.

Not only do you need to find out if the city approves of your private plans on your private property...more importantly, what do the neighbours think. We moved into an 'old country' area of the city for just that reason. People live and let live here. It may be legal, but if the neighbours file complaints enough...you could have to give them up.

Hamilton just vetoed allowing chickens at this time...I'm hoping they change their mind

I know most all'ya'all are not in the area, but I thought I'd mention if anyone in the Thunder Bay area is interested.

There is going to be a backyard chicken workshop for anyone interested in raising, hatching, brooding, butchering, and generally keeping chickens for home use. It's at the Gilles town hall starting at 11:30 and going to 4:30 (BYO lunch). Cost is 4.00 and they will be processing a chicken, FYI

Best way to keep under the wire by keeping your own chickens where your not really supposed to is by not having a rooster. One isn't needed if your only eating eggs, not hatching. And they are sole reason anybody would complain.

I'll admit to keeping 4-5 chickens in town when I wasn't supposed to (I don't now however). I never kept a rooster, I worked at keeping any stink non-existent, I carefully stored feed so as not to attract rodents and I used privacy lattice to conceal the birds. My only neighbour that was going to cause me any problems - an elderly lady that literally complained about everything - I just offered her some of the eggs and that was that cleared up. Kept my little flock for nearly six years, until I moved.
