i have a LOT of books, i believe in paper copies, and have over 200 books that i consider prepping work. (some reference, topic specific, and some fiction)
and as many magazines on different topics. i have 1000+ E books. . .

so you likely can tell that i think info is important. 😯
i started with a video, then i picked up a few good books. since then i've collected and read many more.

here are some solid books that will get you started.

Emergency food storage and survival handbook by Peggy Layton,

she's LDS (doesn't let on in the book) she knows her stuff, a great book, the first one i read, and i think every beginner should read this book! my copy grew legs and never came home. 🙁

Just in case: how to be self-sufficient when the unexpected happens by Kathy Harrison
just started this book, so i can't say it's great, but it's started out good. and yes, i believe she's the lady from doomsday preppers, i bought it before the show though. . .

http://www.amazon.ca/Just-Case-Self-Sufficient-Unexpected-Happens/dp/1603420355/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330297899&sr=1-1

The complete disaster home preparation guide by Robert Roskind
this was the second book i read on the subject, while it's a little harder then Peggy Layton book, it's a very good start.

http://www.amazon.ca/Complete-Disaster-Home-Preparation-Guide/dp/0130859001/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330297982&sr=1-1-fkmr0

Crisis preparedness handbook by Jack Spigarelli
this was the third book i read, now Peggy is a nice LDS when she preps, and Mr Roskind is a little more "survival" set. well Mr. Spigarelli, he's hardcore. it was funny that i read the books in the order i did. this one has more info on firearms, and again well written and worth the read.

no new copies of it for sale at link, and the used ones are $45, find a cheaper price . . . but worth the search for it!

The Unthinkable by Amanda Ripley
a very good read, not on prepping, but on the mindset of a survivor. i think every prepper should read this. the funny thing about this book was, when i was reading it, it was referencing two other books i was reading, and one of them was referencing a study done by the other book this one was referencing. strange inner connectedness lol.

How to survive the end of the world as we know it by James Wesley, Rawles
this one is a lot more advanced, i like the guys fiction, i don't read his blog much, but i think he's dead on!

http://www.amazon.ca/How-Survive-End-World-Know/dp/0452295831/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330298568&sr=1-1-fkmr0

Food production systems for a backyard or small farm DVD $$$$ not 100% sure it's worth the price tag, but it's good

if you want some good fiction

One second after by William R. Forstchen
http://www.amazon.ca/One-Second-After-William-Forstchen/dp/0765356864/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330298719&sr=1-2

Patriots: surviving the coming collapse by James Wesley Rawles
http://www.amazon.ca/Patriots-Surviving-James-Wesley-Rawles/dp/156975599X/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1330298719&sr=1-1-fkmr0

i'm a very slow reader, so i don't spend a lot of time on fiction. these two are preppers must reads.
you won't put them down, and even being a slow reader, i've read Patriots 3 times now. great read.

there are other great books on other topics, but i was aiming for general info for the beginner here. with over 200 books, i've got a lot of the subjects overed. i won't post them all here now, but if you're starting out, you should have a few of these kicking around. they will be your biggest help getting started.

I find a lot of the fiction books do have a few little tips scattered in them. As a kid I read The Girl Who Owned a City it was the first sci-fi/ surival genre I read and I was hooked.

i read a deathlands book as a kid, liked it, but i was too slow a reader to want to read more. i now have the first 40 or so of the books. i've only read about 8 or 9 of them. i'm hoping for some quiet days post fan to read a few more lol.

you can find survival in a lot of things, just like you can find "TRUTH" a kevin smith movie 🙂

I think Doc Tanners tidbits are great. I've been reading Deathlands since the series first came out
