Hi, we have a isolated farm close to Algonquin Park. I want to purchase and learn how to use a radio for emergency purposes. I've been reading avout CB's, shortwaves and HAM's and my head is spinning. Does anyone care to share what would be most useful in a SHTF situation?
thanks!

cb's are good because there are a lot of truckers on the road that have valuable information. The range is about 10-25km with a decent anttenae....Ham radio is worldwide, but you need to be licenced in order to use it....Myself I have a cb radio setup handhelds for the family with a 10km range on them. So at least we can keep in touch. Everyone knows how to use them as well. I want to get the rest of my friends and family handhelds as well so that we can all keep in touch.

You don't need a licence to just listen on HAM, but the licence course will teach you how to use it.

thats correct, you dont need a licence to listen, but there is a course and an exam that you need to take in order to use it.

I have HAM radio but I do not have licence so I can not talk to people but it is really fan to listen to people from all over the world. You can do the exam . by reading the questions and answers over and over and than go for it.I am sure if anything happen I would use it anyway .

From what I understand...and correct me if I'm wrong, you can transmit without a licence in an emergency situation.

I would imagine you could do quite a few things in an emergency situation that would not be allowed day to day. Breaking into a cottage or cabin when you are lost and freezing to death is one example that comes to mind.
