For a while now, I've been looking for an emergency tool that can be used to shutoff gas and water to my urban GTA home. I've been looking for something like the "4 in 1" tool that is widely advertised. http://www.redesupply.com/Tools/c16/p212/4-in-1-Emergency-Tool/product_info.html

Unfortunately, that specific tool won't work with the in ground water shutoff valves used around here. Everything else about the tool seems fine, but I can see the need to shutoff the water outside the home if we ever have to evacuate for a while (like during the ice storm).

Has anyone seen another tool that could do the job?

The water tool I have seen them use looks like this but just shutting the valve off inside your house should be enough.

As for the gas, just have a large adjustable wrench on your BBQ for the tank valve and you'll be fine.

if you can get to it, try a 12 point socket on an extention.

Hi Perfesser. Your suggested tool is something like I was looking for, unfortunately, it has the wrong end on it. The URL below leads to a picture of what I've seen as the normal shutoff valve here. http://www.flickr.com/photos/telserv_ca/6996861093/in/photostream

Hi ranger2012. You idea is the best one I've seen yet. I'll take some measurements and see if there is a 3/4" socket that is thin walled enough to fit that connection. Thanks for the suggestion.

Telserv,
go to a plumbing mart, they have tons of the specialized water tools there. Home Depot Sell them, Home Hardware sells them. Get the long handled one or attach a long handle or even get someone to weld a solid piece of re-bar with a T-top/T-handle.
