I trained with the FN C1A1 7.62 and the Beretta 9mil as well as an assortment of other weapons from 9 mil SMG to a karl gustaf 80 mm rocket . Now I have a Russian SKS 45, 870 Remington, 22 mossberg simi. They have few parts and easy to field strip, all 3 are reliable and field tested, ammo is plentiful and available as well as parts, I usually keep a few 1000`s rounds on hand and practice often. I find you can do pretty much any thing you need to with these three from home defense to hunting and there is not a huge learning curve to become familiar with them. I have a few others but these 3 are my fail safes and all 3 together cost under 800$.

I might know you! Similar firearms, similar training, so similar units? Same time frame

For me, if only one firearmit would be the Model 1200/1300 Defender, with the 3 different barrels

I too, started with the FN, the SMG and the Karl G. In the early 90's we switched to the C7, C9 and C6. The army still uses the Karl G. but I never liked it. Nothing is quite as much fun as opening up with the C6.
As for shotguns, niner D just gave me the OK to buy a Mossberg 550 with a spare barrel, I've been drooling over it for a month now. Next month I'm going on a three day trail ride and it's through bear country, so I told her that I needed a shotgun that was shorter than my horse. It didn't hurt that I had two of the guys I'm going with, sitting there agreeing with me.

As for time frames in the army - '73 to '76 and '93 to 2007.

I use to have an 870 Rem. with 2 separate barrels, one was a modified choke with a rail sight (loved) and a Full choke. Also a 7mm Rem. Magnum, of with I ended up selling because my ex bitched so much about having them in the house. Any who, the 870 was easy for me to strip down and change barrels. There was one shotgun slug that was developed in the late 70’s that looked like an over sized pellet gun round. I haven’t seen it on the market since, but it had remarkable range. Also there was the Malaysian round that was used in Vietnam, a duplex round that used 00 and #4 shot and WAX to hold it together longer. What the 00 didn’t hit the #4 did. We ex-military did learn a few things…

870 will probably be my next purchase but I don't want to have to choose only one!

Gotta Parker Hale Super Safari in 308, Poly Tech M305 which shoots pretty damn go straught from the box, AR-15 w/match upper and a second upper for it as well, Old faithfull Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 sporterized with a nice Monte Carlo stock. Winchester 94 and 2 Remington Nylon 66's. As far as I'm concerdered the best 22's ever made.

CQC - The Winchester Defender & Stevens 311R -Coach gun and if that fails there is always the Remington Rand 1911A1, or FN Browning Hi-Power or one of the 2 S&W Model 19 in a 4" or 2" barrels and a couple back pocket specials Llama XA in 32auto and a FN Browning Baby Auto in 25 auto

Only 3 more I'm looking for, something in 45 LC most likely a Colt SAA or a knockoff and something in 45/70 gov't and a Sig P226. Then I'll have all the toys I want or ever need

I have a pistol a tactical shot gun (mossburg 500)12 ga two .22 one semi one bolt, a Remington 700 in .300win mag a savage .22-250 a single shot .410 and a mossburg 935 semi 12 ga. I'm buying a glock 22 in .40 next month with 1000 rounds and looking at getting a sks for shtf typ situation. One point I wanted to bring up is you don't hear much about the .410 for a defenceive weapon in my opinion for those of you who don't have a restricted liscence for a pistol and are looking for a good all round gun for hunting and defence the 12 ga is a great option however the recoil is great it's big, very loud and intimidates a lot of woman and younger children a .410 has no real kick and will blow a hole through whatever at 10-20 yards. You don't need to worry as much about over penetration and if using a number 4 or # 2 shot then it's not an issue. The most accurate slug from a shotgun is suppose to be a .410 slug. It's something to think about. The ammo is cheap and readily available so are the guns. Get a .410 pump and you got a great bird gun home defence and with a slug you can drop a deer if nessasary. Just though I would mention it.

Now I'm looking at buying a glock 22 in .40, a sig p226 in .40 or a para ordenece 1911 in 45 acp.
I want reliability durability accuracy. Accesseable parts easy maintanence. I have a tokerve 7.62x25 now with is a very fast round that can penetrate a BP vest. I have made up my mind on the .40 or 45 calibe just curious what y'all would recommend I want to get involved with pistol shooting at my local gun club so I'm leaning towards the glock I just don't like the fact it dosent have a hammer!! I also want a .22 pistol for plinking around with and there is a conversion kit that will turn the glock into a .22 pistol. Any help is appreciated.

I just bought a Glock 22. I've had it out only once to the range and I like it. I haven't used any other semi's before so i don't have any opinion on others but I would love a S+W 686 in .357. That would be cool but I can only have one so the Glock 22 is the answer for me.

I shoot my CZ85 combat several times a week. It's extremely accurate and probably the most dependable pistol I've ever owned. Every day at work, I have the opportunity to shoot a variety of handguns. I wouldn't trade my CZ for any of them.

if only one ...eem
my Mossberg 500

shells can be reloaded by hand without a press, just need primers and powder.
(primers are small and powder is light and a can goes along way.

shells can be reused.
(i reuse and reload my own shells by hand, make my own slug bullets)

bullets can be made in a small mold that is light and not to awkward to carry.
bullets can be made out of lead tire weights (lots of those around)

#1 you can shoot nuts, bolts, rocks, nails out of a shoot gun if you have to.
#2 you can turn bird shot into a slug by melting shot or pouring wax over shot.
(above #1 not recommended but can be done in a pinch)

you can even turn your shotgun into a muzzle loader with a used shell and black powder
(check out video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES59LtA7XE8&list=PL6B3D89B23CDE649F&index=3&feature=plpp_video )

can be cleaned without tools if in a hurry.

love my sks but ammo and gun are heavy
ruger 10 22 great can carry lots of ammo but not as versatile.
