My wife studied nursing a few years ago,and although she never got her certificate, she did complete all the theory and did a lot of interning. Add to that the first aid training I received during my 6 years as a workplace first responder, we are well trained. We have been looking for sources of medical equipment that just can't be found in the local pharmacy such as IV bags, surgical tubing, etc. We have heard of a huge veterinary supply company near us and will be going there as soon as we get a chance. Provided that we can find things that are suitable for human use, we should be better stocked than most average people. Once we have visited the outlet, we will post the findings here.

polysporin
Benadryl - allergy meds
generic anti-biotics

this week, I was stung on the hand by 3-6 wasps, eventually my hand looked like a catchers mit! Swelling up to the elbow, visits to docs office then off to Emerg..
If I had taken larger or more doses of Benadryl first, it would have kept the swelling down.
Today, I can move my fingers more, still can not make a fist or carry anything, but swelling, pain and itchiness is down, tomorrow hopefully, lots more down and then 6 days of anti-biotics.

O wilderness, I am so sorry to hear this, take it easy and hopefully over the next week or so you will start to feel better, take care of yourself.

Stop sticking your hand where it don't belong buddy!
Seriously though, that must have stung like hell.
Take it easy and recoup!

Hi All:

Thought that I would throw in my 2 cents. The most basic first aid kit starts with a calm, cool, collected first aider. Mostly, first aid is the practical application of common sense. Having said that, the simplest first aid kit is 6 triangular bandages, a handful of 4x4 dressings, and a roll of tape. Now I know most people want more than that. Ok, throw in a bottle of Chlorhexadine spray (any drug store). The best first aiders are those that can do everything with nothing. They are the best at improvisation. There is very little that I cannot do with those 6 triangulars, 4x4 and tape. That is what is in my bug out bag.

Anyone who is going to the Uxbridge meeting, my wife and I are putting together a little show and tell on first aid and improvised equipment. (if time permits).

Remember, the first rule of first aid (especially in a SHTF situation) is that no matter how hard we try we cannot save them all.
