Hello everyone,
I'm new to the site and to the idea of prepping. Thank you to all the people who post, as someone new to this it has been very helpful.

I will start prepping with food first and foremost. Could you provide some advice?

What do you recommend? Freeze dried food or dehydrated, from what I have learned, freeze dried food tends to be commercially produced items, while dehydrated can be home made.

What would be the life span of dehydrated food stored in Mylar bags/appropriate buckets? Is the qualify of freeze dried food much better?

Thanks you,

The bulk of my Emergency Food Supplies are Freeze Dried Product. I have chosen to go the Freeze Dried route for their extreme shelf life.

Freeze Dried Products are not cheap and typically have a Shelf Life of 20 - 30 Years (depending on the product/producer).

Dehydrated foods are cheaper to purchase and have a average Shelf life of 5 - 10 years (depending on Product/Producer).

As for non-commercial dehydrated foods (made at home) I'm currently planning to experiment with this myself. I'll keep you posted 🙂

I have some long term stuff that is FD in #10 cans. Shelf life 25 years. FD holds taste and nutrition better over long periods.
Stuff from my own garden is frozen or eaten now but I plan to dehydrate for the short term, a year or two.

Whatever you do get, 5 years goes by faster than you think.
