I was thinking about the cost of instant breakfast cereals such as cream of wheat and oatmeal (I shouldn't eat either of them cause of gluten). I have some brown rice farina and it requires 5 to 8 minute cooking times. When I am at home its not an issue but it does make a lot. I have added organic raw blue agave syrup to the "leftovers" and froze it in small containers. It works well as a snack for work. I was thinking of trying to figure out how to turn it into an instant breakfast for work so all I would need is some hot water and a mug. I found a recipe for making "instant" oatmeal. I have to admit it surprised me as I thought you had to cook oatmeal for 3 to 5 minutes.

Ingredients:
1 cup of quick rolled oats
2 tbsp of powdered milk
1/2 cup of dried sliced strawberries
1tsp of brown sugar (optional)

Cooking Equipment: your mug or bowl

Cooking Time: 2 min

Serves: 2

Instructions:
Pre-mix and bag ingredients at home divided between bowls just cover with boiling water, and stir let sit (covered if you can) for 2 min. stir and add more water to taste.

Before I start trying, has only one done "instant" breakfast cereals with either oatmeal, Red River cereal or the brown rice farina? I would prefer not to waste any food trying to get something to work.

thanks

See my links on Hayboxes and rocket stoves in the other topic,
a Haybox is an old name, basically it is a Hot Box. Anything can be turned into a hotbox, variations are put the boiling water into the pot, around the outside of the pot or both.

Then look up Thermos Cooking as well.
2 variations, use the thermos to cook during the day
b. use the thermos to soak seeds/or beans overnight and then boil them in morning or cook during the day.

Edited to add in Links;

another good option is to use a Haybox (cooking via thermal mass heating and continual heating)

I read your post on the Haybox, thank you for it btw.

I was hoping more for a recipe to just add water, wait a few minutes and then eat it. That would mean only one kettle of boiling water and one mug. (or 2 mugs if you need your coffee or tea with your breakfast). lol

Well, I have been expermenting with cooking rice, and noodles and then drying them with the dehrdrator, and have made this one, that might work for breakfast type meal.

1/3 cup dried cooked long grain white or brown rice, 2 tbsp of finely chopped dried appels, 2 tbsp instant skim or whole milk powder, 1 tbsp of brown sugar, 1/4 tsp of cinnamon a pinch of nutmeg or ginger, an salt.

Add one cup of boiling hot water. I found that you needed to blend the rice after it dried to mostly powder/smaller bits, and then you will have a quick apple rice pudding, I found that it needed to sit longer then they said, but it tasted good..
