Hi all, where do you guys find is a good place to get rice, beans, salt, sugar and other food things to stockpile in bulk? Looking for 50lb bags if possible. I farm so I plan to just clean some wheat to store. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Hi Adam - check out Grain Processing in Toronto if you are within driving distance.
From an earlier post: It bears repeating = for those reasonably close by this is the place to go!
Grain Process Enterprises Ltd 115 Commander Boulevard , Scarborough , ON , M1S3M7 (416) 291-3226
This is where Bulk Barn buys the items for their stores. It is open to the public and you can get 10/25kg bags of almost anything your heart desires - food storage heaven in my opinion! 🙂
They do NOT have a website however you can call and they will send you a listing of everything they have to offer and they will give you prices over the phone - I've found them to be very nice and knowledgable people. Most of the prices are near half of what they are at Bulk Barn - or at least significantly cheaper.
It's easy to find as well - just off the 401 in Markham.
P.S. - they don't accept credit cards

One of these days I am going to get there. The last time I called they even have large baking supplies for things like royal icing.
Well thanks very much! I am in Toronto area quite often and will have to look them up! I was hoping to find somewhere a little closer but that may have to do.. What do they take for payments.
Some of the supermarkets have a " restaurant " section. You can find huge bags of oats, rice, baking powder and soda,
everything in bulk size, #10 cans of fruits and vegies ( NOT dehyrated ), bulk JELLO , etc etc.
I found a section in some NO FRILLS store.

It's worth the drive. They accept cash and debit cards. You'll want to look out for 105 instead of 115 Commander blvd as 105 is associated with the portal open to the public. You can call in advanced (416-291-3226) to get an idea on pricing. There food list is quite extensive, although unfortunately, not available online. Grab a few copies when you get there (They're located immediately on your left-hand side when you enter). They don't offer pricing on their food list as the prices constantly change. The lady at the cash that takes your order is foreign so make sure you understand her when she gives you a price on something. She can also be a little grumpy at times. In most cases food items will come in 2 or 3 increments. For example: beef soup base available in 5, 10 and 25 pounds. Overall the best due to the variety and pricing in my opinion. They offer a wide selection of organic options as well.
A second source is the LDS cannery in Toronto ( http://providentliving.org/self-reliance/food-storage/home-storage-center-locations?lang=eng ). I'll be doing a group event there on the 21st of this month. While their food list is limited you area able to walk away with a canned item that will be good for the next 30 years.
A third source for canned goods is a company called Bal Trading ( http://411.ca/business/profile/6095995 ). They don't have a website and they're etiquette isn't the best. However, they do offer some decent prices and variety on bulk, canned goods.
A forth source is local farmers (although the season is pretty much done). I know some farmers that offer the absolute best price on grains, rice, etc. I may put a list together for next year. The trick is to get direct contact with a big, player farmer - or in my case a smaller farmer that knows all the big, player farmers.
A fifth source is to look for local food related businesses going out of business. Here's one such example:
Here's a couple of quotes from the ad: "No reasonable offer will be turned down....." "Note: * Large volume buyers will be able to get best price"
As you can see there is an opportunity to buy in bulk at what is likely to be a great price.
Good luck!

A bulk, nutrition/health store going out of business. A good place to get some bulk vitamins!

Have you been there?
Is there still a good variety of stuff or is it slim pickings?

No I haven't. I was just pointing out that places like this go out of business and do offer great deals. I wasn't saying anything about this place specifically - just the notion or plausibility that bulk foods can be obtained for great prices through sources like these.

I usually just wait for Food Basics to have a really good rice sale, then I buy 5 bags at a time(5kg). It fills the buckets I have and we don't eat rice all the time, so the price is good for me.
I was at Walmart and noticed really good price on TILDA rice 10lb size . So I bought x 5 of them.
If we could only get them to put oxygen absorbers inside the bags. 😉 😆
