Welcome to JeffD, Timberwolf and the Beav - ha!

More peeps from Ontario!! Doesn't it feel like nooooobody preps in Canada?! Well - truth is - we do! Maybe we're just quieter about it than our American friends.

Best places for canned food is still the grocery store - No Frills, Freshco and the Superstore in my opinion. I have a price book so I that I'll know a good deal when I see one. I'll start another post and explain what that's all about.

So glad to see a few more people joining in so we'll have more input into conversations.

Anita

Hello Ontario - so excited to find this website. I just joined and look forward to all the tips. My husband and I live in Niagara Falls - sure not 200K from the border!! Have always kept extras on hand - raised in N. Ontario and mom always bought for at least 2 weeks. I do the same. Now we are told to prepare for min 6 weeks. Fresh is a challenge - if winter and harder if power goes out - so lots to learn and think and prepare. Appreciate this "new community."

200km is my set idea and standard! Only my idea that I know of.
Also, no closer than 50 miles from a Nuclear Reactor and 100 would be best as well.

Hi from Minden Ontario. I'm new to the forum but not to preparedness. I've been thinking of preparedness since 1979 but had to work in the city to get out of there. I bought small farm land in 1992. I keep and naturally propagate chickens, have a small orchard and a large garden. Save seed and preserve food, root cellar. Not off grid yet but I have woodstoves. I'm connected with local food producers. I designed a chicken coop for cold climates. I found the combs, wattles and sometimes feet can freeze under minus 17 Celsius. www.readycoop.com

ReadyCoop,,,
I am impressed those are very nice coops and not at all what I thought they might look like. There are a lot of good ideas there, congratulations!

The property that I help out on and stay at most weekends is about 15min south of Minden, although for some reason I put Omeeme.. LOL. We might want to trade you for the seed in the spring time.

Thanks about the coops.

I'll have plenty of some seeds in the spring. Next season I'll do my best to increase my seed inventory which includes the dried baking beans and some grain.

It's nice to know you are nearby. We tend to have a lot of preppers in this area. We have a good start on local food. It's a good idea to get into the habit of connecting with local farmers and buying from them or trading. I am just connecting with a neighbor with milk goats. We may try a goat-share. My intention is to concentrate in the kitchen on processing basic foods.. like sprouts, dried foods, ferments, cheese and butter. Not a good paying job but I can now afford the time to do it.

I am making a compilation of photos showing wild edibles, edible perennials, and food related chores shown as a timetable. I'll probably add farm chores as I go for city folks scrambling to re-acquaint themselves with rural life and nature. Our experience could end up very valuable in time.

Hello LGClement,
I also live in Oshawa, there is another person here who has a farm in Oshawa, so welcome, and ask away on the questions.

Those coops are awesome. I've been regularly annoying folks at city hall for two years now so that I can have chickens. They aren't allowed in our city. 🙁

Looks like the gangs all here!

There are some sly ways of getting around having chickens in the city, but you do need a big enough backyard that the neighbors cant hear ( chickens can be noisy ) ... and their droppings smell pretty bad. Keep up the fight with the city.. Len

Hello All!
Very glad to hear of so many Preppers within a reasonable distance! I and family live near West Guilford, about 25 minutes north of Minden. Looks like I have some good neighbours!
Since we've been living in the area for 45 plus years, (on and off), we have experienced several different outages and storms. We have a stock of food and other supplies. (Just recovering from the almost bankruptcy as well) Because of that I've become much more aware of how short a time most people are ready for. At the moment we could manage about three weeks but of course that all depends on what the emergency would be.
We used to know some people who had goats for milk but they passed on many years ago. They were REAL preppers having survived the Great Depression, and continued with the same self sufficiency they had to adopt to survive.
I will be glad to share in the knowledge we all possess.
Pleased to make your acquaintance!
Tom
