Hi there,

I'm new to the site. I have never called myself a "prepper" but I guess I am.

In 2006 we started to see it coming - sold our home in Oshawa and moved to the bush... We read up on peak oil, the federal reserve, how the money system really works.... we connected the dots... we still are, I guess. Just watching it unfold.

My husband and I moved from the city to north of Belleville. We have 32 acres, mixed bush, chicken coops, and a few solar panels. We bought a fixer upper - without a mortgage. We wanted to be as far away from the central bankers as we could.

We've spent the last 5 years getting this "money pit" of a house in a somewhat livable condition. We have a greenhouse, chickens, and some sense of home.

We are still nowhere near prepared with food stores, etc. But we're getting there.

I'm afraid time's a tickin... How much time do we have before everyone else figures it out????

Anyway, nice to be here. 😀

Welcome Welcome and your place sounds great! Congratulations.
Look up Permaculture, and see how the land can work for you, might things go a bit faster that way.

Don't worry...they won't...even when society is crumbling around them...

I figure if your not prepared by 2014 - 2015 (when oil really will peak, not including any unforeseen high threat, low probability events) then don't bother. It's already too late.

Hi LindaB:
You and your husband are definitely “preppers” and you should be proud of it. Not only have you read the warning signs but you have taken direction action to prepare for whatever comes your way. Way to go!
I was born and raised in Ontario (just outside Hamilton) and stayed there until I joined the military but have not been back for many, many years. I still love the province and all that it offers in way of great off-grid land.
My wife and I will be taking a trip from British Columbia, where we are living at this moment, to Ontario this spring and summer. We have a large 5th wheel trailer and a truck and will be looking for some nice land to purchase with or without a fixer-upper on it. We don’t want to pay much and it’s really the land we value rather than a house/cabin as we intend to live in the 5th wheel until we get our place built.
You guys sound as though you have the perfect piece of heaven for your lifestyle.
From what I have read and believe I think we have about 5 to 10 years before life here in North America really gets ugly. I believe that our government already knows that it cannot sustain itself and that climate change is real and if they told actually everyone all that they know to be true there would be widespread panic and then the crap would really hit the whirling fan blades.
I look forward to hearing more about how you and your husband are doing and the steps you are taking to better your lifestyle or even the things you have done that didn’t work would be valuable hearing about.
Take care.

Hi Captain Ahab,
Thanks for the pat on the back. Makes me feel better.
Starting to feel a little less "crazy" and way more realistic, every day.
It's great to hear your coming back to Ontario -
Don't wanna sell myself here, not my point of being on this site - but if you buy up in the Belleville/Quinte/Bancroft area, contact me. I sell real estate. I'll help you find a place.
And, I have to say, winter is tough up here - but there are moments, quite often, where I can't believe I am so lucky to live in such a beautiful place. We are steps from a lake, and the water is as clean as tap water. No pollution, lots and lots of trees, and tons of animals. So much better than the city life!!!

Hi LindaB:
The pat on the back I gave you was well deserved and I congratulate you and your husband on reading the handwriting on the wall and then doing something about it.
Way back when (too many years ago) my first real job was at the Bata Shoe Factory, I am sure you know where that is and I spent quite a bit of time around the Belleville/Trenton area.
I don’t know if we want to come that far south when we come to Ontario as land is very cheap in the north of the province but who knows what may transpire. Are there properties around your area (5 acres minimum)that are off the beaten path a bit and are ripe for homestead type development?
I am not worried about winter, once you have wintered in both the Arctic and Edmonton the rest of Canada in winter seems tropical. lol.
Talk soon and enjoy your little piece of heaven.

Land up here is quite cheap and easy to find. There are properties off the beaten path that are still accessible, but because they aren't on the main drag, things are cheap. Land will run you roughly $1000 to $2000 per acre, depending on location and water availability. Some are cheaper, some are more. And winters up here are a little oppressive, but certainly not Thunder Bay oppressive (no offence to Thunder Bay). We're about an hour and a half north of Lake Ontario... we get about 10-20 days a year where it's below 20. It's tough, but livable. We heat with wood only, and our home is about 70 on cold days, 74 on warm ones. Summer time makes it worth it. When the time comes, if you want to consider this area, let me know and I can help you if you want. The more "preppers" up in my area, the better my network becomes, and my chances of fairing are better... and so are yours.

Hello to U....<G>, I sure am glad to find this Ontario site.....I thought I was the only prepper in the Belleville area! I have been checking out a lot of sites, but all were USA sites. I am new to prepping(just since Jan) but so much to learn, so much to purchase!! I too live north of Belleville in a small village and probably live within 5-10 miles from you LindaB! I am excited about meeting other like minded people. I am not too sure just how to navigate this site, and may make a few errors, but should get it real soon!

I just discovered this website today. To date most of my online-prepper-interaction has been an American-heavy site (whenshtf).
It's awesome to see that there are many other Ontarians, indeed, folks in Hastings County, into prepping, and on the internet talking about it.

I'm a Toronto kid who spent a couple of years after university working/living on small-scale organic farms. Back in 2010 got involved in a group purchase of land near in middle Hastings County. We had some hiccups to start, had to boot out the guy who created the project.
2011 saw a couple of us co-owners tent out and grow 1.5 acres of veggies. We packed up and went back to cities for the winter (me in Toronto, other co-owners in Peterborough). I was hoping to be out on land again in 2012 - market gardening - starting some permaculture stuff - building a group root cellar - building myself and wifey an earthship-style hobbit-hole / cabin. But whole in city over winter we've conceived, and are expecting to be first-time parents in the fall (we're in our mid-20s).
So while we want to be prepared, and want to live in a community, we need to work and save up money.

So I'm going to miss the fields and forests north of the county, will only get out there on weekends to help with some planting and building. Otherwise - gotta be in Toronto, where work/money is. Maybe I'll save up enough to build and stock up a fallout shelter... 😛

Hey There 🙂

We are in Quinte heading more towards the county. We bought this house about a year ago and Ibecame a prepper more officially about 6 months ago. The weather and solar activity really sparked the desire in me and of course my kids. My husband is also starting to get into as of recently. Hope to meet a few preppers and swap some neat ideas 🙂

Feather 🙂
