I just discovered this website today. To date most of my online-prepper-interaction has been an American-heavy site (whenshtf).
It's awesome to see that there are many other Ontarians, indeed, folks in Hastings County, into prepping, and on the internet talking about it.

I'm a Toronto kid who spent a couple of years after university working/living on small-scale organic farms. Back in 2010 got involved in a group purchase of land near in middle Hastings County. We had some hiccups to start, had to boot out the guy who created the project.
2011 saw a couple of us co-owners tent out and grow 1.5 acres of veggies. We packed up and went back to cities for the winter (me in Toronto, other co-owners in Peterborough). I was hoping to be out on land again in 2012 - market gardening - starting some permaculture stuff - building a group root cellar - building myself and wifey an earthship-style hobbit-hole / cabin. But whole in city over winter we've conceived, and are expecting to be first-time parents in the fall (we're in our mid-20s).
So while we want to be prepared, and want to live in a community, we need to work and save up money.

So I'm going to miss the fields and forests north of the county, will only get out there on weekends to help with some planting and building. Otherwise - gotta be in Toronto, where work/money is. Maybe I'll save up enough to build and stock up a fallout shelter... 😛

Hey adamandah

If you haven't read it yet, may I suggest reading "Simple Solar Homesteading" by La Mar Alexander. His book tell how he build a solar powered small cabin in the mountains of Utah. If I remember correctly it cost him around $5000US for every thing in 2007. That was the cabin, the front porch, doors, windows and all his solar stuff. I downloaded my copy from a bit torrent site for free. Just can remember which one. It may give you some helpful ideas.

If you can't find a copy, let me know. I'll be in Etobicoke at the Military show this Saturday. I'll burn you a copy.

Whoa, just realized I never replied to Jwild's offer for a burned copy of an awesome-sounding book. That's what I get for not keeping up-to-date on discussions.

Hi all
my wife, daughter and I reside north of Belleville as well, around Madoc. I don't know if we consider our selves preppers, however in the lifestyle we lead we will and can survive when something dose happen and it will. We live as homesteaders did years ago although we have the modern conveniences of electricity and a car and truck but we don't necessarily rely on them. My wife and I both work outside the farm to pay the bills. All the food we consume, we produce off the farm. We have a milk cow and some beef cattle, hogs, chickens, bees, a huge garden and lots of land to hunt. My wife is an amazing person, she makes cheese and homemade bread and cans everything from the garden, helps kill and butcher the animals and cooks everything from scratch.
So I think we are some what preppers because we both think in our lifetime some really bad is going to happen to the world as we know it and I believe it starting to happen now. But with our lifestyle when it happens I think we have a good chance of surviving it as they did hundreds of years ago

So it seems there are alot of people here who live in or own property / spend some of their time in Hastings county, especially around Madoc. Maybe we should organize a gathering? I would be very interested in meeting other homesteaders and preppers in the area, maybe form a loose mutual aid group.
