One of the best places for homesteading/old school living books are second hand book sales and second hand stores. Saves lots of money and the information is incredible.
Google books has some interesting reads (for free) on canning and rural living.

I don't know of any way to draw them to the farm and area, I guess it helps that we don't spray and have not since we moved here, we let some stripes be very wild (keeps the firefly's around as well) and its a mix of woods, open hay fields, crop land, pasture and we have both a river and a creek within very easy walking etc.

The bats in North America could use your help nowadays. Some disease has been killing them off in droves the last few years. White nose syndrome I think.

Yes Perfesser,
Bats, Bees, Frogs, Turtles and some other things. Man is killing the world and is too stupid to make the connection, or too cheap to change.

Carbon04-don't forget to knit them some little jumpers (black and gold) to keep the little fuzzies warm in winter.

also look into Bee Rest Stations, no maint, no hassel, it is a place for them to rest in, and they live longer

I've just looked up bats (does that make me an "expert" like Carbon04?)- you've got little ones in Canada (is the biggest one the Hoary Bat?) weighing about 30g?
Like Crocodile Dundee says "That's not a..." "This is a ...." Our biggest bat (I think) is The Grey Headed Flying Fox (between 600 & 1000g) No wonder you don't mind having the bats around!

Also looked up bee rest stations - Every year there's a really big swarm that decides my huge oak tree is just the place to park in for about a month in spring (excellent timing for the budding fruit trees too) Like farmgal, I don't use any poison on my little property (1/2 a town block) and I've got lots of beasties apart from the bees that visit (lizards, frogs, birds, bennies, butterflies) no snakes yet!!

actually, ive just spent the past 5 minutes reading up on them and now consider myself a Koala expert...im not interested in obtaining a Koala anymore. It would apear they are into the 'adult lifestyle' (swinging) as depicted in the 'four way' shown below...I have kids in the house you know!

They are cute aren't they - but they have really long claws and they like to pee on people. You should hear the males in the bush at night ...and the drop bears. But...with Grizzly bears and polar bears....I guess you guys win!

Haven't you heard the song "I come from a land downunder" - men are men (unless they're women)??
