Haven't you heard the song "I come from a land downunder" - men are men (unless they're women)??

Nope, never heard of it. Sounds Australian to me, and I try to avoid anything Australian, except for that blonde I met in London in 96.....I didn't avoid her, ha, quiet the opposite....what were we talking about???

You really are a talented lady aren't you! Do you find that the work involved in spinning is worth it? I'm thinking of starting, just not sure yet.

Is the work worth it.. no, its much easier to buy and work finished products, but as a skill to have-yes, and once you get it right, its kind of a zen time.. its like riding a horse, or canning, it requires you to focus and "be" in the moment and that is a very relaxing in a way..

I'm going to marry farmgal, or transplant her head on mine. I guess my best homesteading skill, is the ability to lean any skill needed. show me how to do it and all get'er done.

Do you all think the modern homesteading, is like off grid sustainable type living. Or is homesteading no first world comforts. Total back to basics.

Modern homesteading in the developed world has many of the 'creature comforts' I think ........provided by off grid power or nuclear, coal, or hydro generated electricity. I think it would be hard for most homesteaders to go totally 'back to basics' if other choices existed.....
And I think that there are many types of homesteaders.....all doing a great job in their world.

Technology can give us almost all the comforts we have now while still living a much simpler life. Maybe not with the convenience we now enjoy but living simply doesn't have to mean sacrificing any of our modern goodies.

My dream homesteading plan would be a nice log or cord wood cabin, water collecting system, in house out house, well with solar pump, solar panel for lights and some things like music, computer. Wood cook stove, good running chain saw, old farm truck powered by corn oil or something I can grow and tune into fuel . May be a horse for working the fields but some one would have to train me and the how to. and have a large part of the land into Permaculture Design growing. For barter I would tap my maples and trade for hand made clothing, shoes. I would hand craft my bowls spoons etc and make potter for other house hold items to sell and trade or barter.

We were fortunate to move to a property 1 km away from a couple that have been homesteading for 30+years before it was popular, they started from a 1/4 section covered in bush and built a farm, they use draft animals, market garden, can & dry there food, raise bee`s,pigs, chickens, cut there own wood and hay all with horses. This last year I have been learning all I can from them. The odd time I even teach them something usually about blacksmithing. We have been trying to develop a barter system in our area and it is coming along nicely. We need to build relationships with our elders and access the information they have.I have bought alot of books and they are all and well but the elders have taught me stuff that you just can`t read about.
