With all the networking on line, how far would you be willing to travel for a meet?
When I first got on line I met some follow family tree researchers. They have been having a "family reunion" every other year for over 20 years. The reunion is basically a BBQ. Some of the families from Texas, BC, AB and ON for the meet in MI.
Oldschool,
Is this a trick question??? If the timing is right this summer, I may hit meets from coast-to-coast. But under normal conditions I would travel one province East or West, if I could make it.
Mountainman.
Lol no, not a trick question. Just a simple question. Now where is that angel emot 😀
So far, I have travelled over 10 cities away from where I live to some Pepper meetings!
so a 3.5+ hr drive.
From now on I will only do travel if it is a longer event, say mostly full day, with some info sessions, otherwise, not interested. A full weekend would even be better, especially with some other like minded people. So a 1-2 hr meeting, only willing to travel about 30min tops.
Expandable idea;
if someone has land is looking for others to share and help in the prepping and creation of a small prepper Village (will spell that out below) on their land, I am in with a few very basic rules.
Prepper Village idea; a group of people, on land with semi and permanent shelters, helping each other with long term survival in mind. The prepper village idea is that no one Man is an Island. It takes a small group to make it in a full on shift (SHFT) situation, so by law in Ontario Canada right now, you do not need a building permit for anything under 100sqft.
I live in an area smaller than that, although I do have a couple of storage vehicles due to my work and equipment. A 10x10 or 10 ft round is actually a lot of room, if it is laid out properly. A group who is looking out for each other, creating some aquaponics or hugleculture or permaculture style gardens, along with some basic defensive positions with a mind to eventually have the group exist there full time, is highly desirable.
To this group, I would spend every weekend there, and most of the winter, working on projects and creating this village. To this end, I would also relocate, so long as there was a minimum agreement for work for land usage/ownership etc. We could make a communal work area, a communal entertainment and eating area, setup trails, greenhouses, workshops etc.
So travel depending on what is being offered.
I can't go too far due to my lack of transportation and abundance of work hours 🙂 On a good day when I can get a ride and do not work, I could go most places in ON and the West of QC. If I got more time and a guaranteed ride I would go anywhere to network but I do not have that option.
Those rainy days you were saving for...may not be quelled by cash.
I would say 3.5to 4 hours would be my max, but like WildE, only for a day long meetup. This puts me in the area of Ottawa, Brockville, etc. Kingston would be on the extreme outside of my range. As for a 1-2 hour thing, Montreal would be the limit.
With planning for a full day or weekend meet, upwards of six to eight hours max, for a couple hours, within 2 to 3 hours is the main one..
