Good job

Love to hear all about it. This is one of the things I have no knowledge on. Would it be bad to admit the part of the reason "food" is the theme is because I was hoping to learn/see how Mylar bags work 🙂

I thought the way you did it with the straw and heat sealer was great, I have been looking for a foodsaver, but they are pricey... I will splurge soon or just keep checkin Kijiji!

I really wish I had of found this site sooner as I litterally in the last month or so just did this myself and have been wondering if I did it right or not 😆

I am so new to Vac Sealers that I have NOT even vac packed a bag of food for the freezer yet, the only thing I have used it for was vac packing my 5 Galon Mylar bags.

I have the attachment on mine so I can't wait for your video

You can sppend several hundred dollars on a hand held heat sealer...or do like a lot of preppers on youtube do and use a ceramic hair straightener that you can get a a beauty supply place. Bexarprepper on youtube...she has a video demonstrating this. Some people buy a cheap clothes iron and use that ...no steam.

the way i do it is simple and easy.

i put the mylar bag in a 5 gal bucket, i fill it with the product, i add a 1/3-1/2 cup of DE, when i have all the bags/buckets ready for sealing i open my jar of Oxygen absorbers (i use the 300cc ones IIRC) i throw in 3-5 (over kill) and i take a 2x4 and a hot cloths iron and seal it 90% of the way. i squeeze any left over air out, seal up the rest and let cool. put ends in bucket, seal on a lid.

i've had 2 bags that the seal broke on, but the oxy absorbers sealed from the lid down, no problems.

i use a bucket tool to removed lids, but i've got a bunch of those gamma seal lids for buckets that are in use.
i bought a number of coloured gamma seals from http://www.incaseof.ca/store/containers-food-water/food-storage-containers/gamma-plastic-lids-containers

but i've bought white gamma seal lids ON SALE at TSC

http://www.incaseof.ca/plastic-lid-opening-tool bucket lid tool if you don't know what it is. . . it lifts of lids with ease. . . they are still a pain to get on the bucket though 🙂

a product i want to make, to help seal mylar bags easier is called the mylar buddy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNJ_-SC3xS8 video here of the mylar buddy. it's more or less how i do it, but i don't have the notches in my board, i'm going to make one for my next sealing.

it's a lot easier then it sounds at first. . . i was hesitant the first time i did it, but it really easy simple.

Has anyone tried sealing the zipper lock mylar bags? And if so, how do they compare to the regular ones.
