So now we know why she can not use a rifle, she is holding her cane, wagging it at the Attackers! JK.. ;0

Actually Cane fighting is a very good defensive and offensive martial skill. Although I like your idea about the slender metal rod, I would rather get hit with one of them than an Oak Staff anyday! Remember, just use anything at hand. I would suggest getting a firearm as well as the dogs and staff. JMHO

WildE...my mother always told me "don't start something you can't finish" my dad told me "if you can't beat them, hit them in a "tender" place to bring them down and then run like hell" ... I can still run at 52. I have the basics of Soma Kai (a blend of karate/judo/street fighting techniques) AND I have a bloody big dog. Legally I can't have firearms unless I join a gun club (can't afford that yet) but I can use firearms. Ex Artillery ..thank you very much!(insert indignant flipping of hair here) Seriously.. Is an oak staff better than any other? Also, is the staff used for smacking or prodding?

An oak staff is used for both, smacking and prodding. The problem with an oak staff is the same as for any weapon. It's only good if you happen to have one with you at the time you need it. I don't carry one with me so I have to be able to run faster than whoever I'm with. It's either that or I can trip my companion to provide a distraction while I get away. 😆

You sound Yummy 😀
Women who wear Army boots and hiking boots are HOT, combat arms!
Ikea or another furniture place sells the Oak curtain holders (name escapes me that again) the ones that go over the big windows. Those can quickly be modified to be used as Oak Staffs and are a lot cheaper than the $30-$50 price tag of the ones in Martial Arts Studios.

Simple test will tell you.
Take a piece of plywood
lay it flat over two objects with a large gap in the middle
now smack the plywood first with the Metal Curtain Rod/staff
Now smack it using the same force with the Oak Staff

In all the time I showed this to people on a few times did the staff, 1. not bend, 2. leave only a small dent, 3. hurt your bloody hands
The Oak Staff almost always goes though, or leave a bloody big dent, does not bend and hurts your hands a lot less
Another benefit, less shiny for night time, is better to hold onto in the rain, it even rains in Oz land, can be put into multiple locations around the house. Say you bought a few for about $10 each, so get 4-7 of them, put them, lean them or disguise them, everywhere. You can also use them Hiking, I do and most do not realise it is a staff, just a big walking stick.

ROFLMAO..you young blokes! Just remember that there could be more of us more mature individuals than you young rascals! Don't know if you got my PM reply (have no idea what I'm doing there) but "is good, mate"
I will get myself some lovely big oak curtain rods (shame they'll never go up on the windows) and test them on my punching bag. The metal curtain rods are lighter and sound more like whipping than solidly striking but enable me to move faster. One benefit I'm counting on is that women (when they're scared or enraged) can use their adrenaline to be faster (and to hit harder than expected)to avoid really close combat against men. That's my theory and I really hope I don't have to prove it! However, I'll take your advice and start working with the staff as well.

or just carve your own...a lot of work but then you can use it as a walking stick while hiking. Its something that can be left in plain sight and no one will question it. 😀

Actually, I taught Nam Buk Pi kung fu for several years and fought full contact during that time. I've also been in well over 400 bar/street fights and I have never run from a fight in my life. I can't see myself breaking that habit. Being in so many fights doesn't make me tough, it just means that I'm not always too bright. Besides that, even at my age now, I'm still trying to impress my wife and I don't think that she would be too happy if I just ran away. Especially if I left her there.
I haven't been in a fight since I quit working in bars. Nowadays I depend on situational awareness to keep me and mine from harms way. However, I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was. Or so I'd like to think.
