Here in Ontario we are not subject to the severe natural disasters common to other areas of North America. Mostly they are limited to severe winter/summer storms and the odd tornado. Earthquakes and Hurricanes are infrequent, and if possible staying away from the Nuclear plants makes prepping easier.
There are many man (woman) made disasters just waiting to happen. Again depending on location I think we are pretty much out of the line of fire when compared to some U.S areas.
I tend to put what I consider the greatest threat as my primary prep with additional items to multi-task the additional risks.
I would be interested in what others consider to be their biggest threat and how you prep for this problem.
HTP
what I am prepping for is a collapse of civil order. a Pandemic seems most likely to me, and one of the scariest. My other great fear is a Solar storm wiping out the world power grid like it did in 1859.
I do not believe how this comes about or what disaster occurs what is the greatest threat is a mob of hungry desperate people.
regardless of what occurs my plan is that as soon as super markets start to close I am leaving the city heading north.
I believe all preppers should have minimum 1 years worth of food (8 months long term 4 months short term)
the ability to collect and purify water
Weapons and knowledge of how to use them.
heat and shelter are the other musts.
I prepare for everything. Period.
There is, however, some obvious reasons that certain disasters (man/woman-made) or otherwise are more likely to occur then others.
...we are not subject to the severe natural disasters common to other areas of North America
The US has been hit quite hard with a number of natural disasters that most Canadians play ignorance to. I suspect many preppers were born from the the natural disasters they experienced firsthand. But in any event I agree with your statement. There are, however, some natural disasters which were quite susceptible to. Solar weather or more specifically the byproduct of a solar flare of geomagnetic storm can easily affect Canadians. We saw this (geomagnetic storm) in Quebec not too long ago.
Based on my research most people seem to be concerned with a financial collapse. They've clearly outlined how the system is unstable and how it's simply a matter of time before it happens. Some people say 2 or 3 years, others say 10 - but they are convinced it's going to happen. I should mention that this information comes from the more intelligent preppers that I know and my biased is slowly leaning towards them the more information that feed me.
I would tend to be more concerned about a viral pandemic. I don't care what 'preppers' say but when scientists that research viruses for a living state that they're adapting to anti-biotics and it's simply a matter a time it does make me wonder. We've seen it time and time again in history. Mass amounts of the population have been wiped out. There's nothing magical or special about this generation (or the next one) that's going to prevent an outbreak from occurring. And they way things are now it's almost like were asking for it to happen. Just have a look at all the genetically modified garbage we're eating. Chemical remedies for the effect not the cause. And what about the stressful lives that most of us lead but what is considered 'normal' within society. A viral pandemic could happen any moment in my opinion and (speaking personally with hospital officials from various locations) - we, as a society, are not prepared.
A third concern could be that of an electro-magnetic pulse. This would wipe out 90% of the population within 1 year while retaining (to some degree) the land and natural resources. If another country wanted to expand into Canada then this would be the easiest way to do it. China and Russia have openly admitted to creating technologies specific to EMP's. I have no concerns about Russia. A terrorist organization, North Korea and perhaps China are the ones to watch for - in my opinion. It would take approximately 5 to 7 minutes for the entire event to occur, from start to finish, before it's over. Unfortunately, if such an event were to occur in the USA then we would be effected. The strength and magnitude of an EMP will exhaust this post (not that I haven't already), however, the point to keep in mind is that if an EMP occurred over central USA then we will feel some effects here in Ontario.

Eh, curious... why are you not concerned about Russia? I believe that when a weapon like an EMP would be deployed especially on North American soil, Russia and China would both be involved. No one's gonna take the USA alone, and when anyone decides to take the USA, for any reason, I believe those two nations have mutual interest in doing so.
Another thing you might want to research is a vacuum bomb. These have no longstanding effects like a nuke but could decimate a nation.
I think in this area it's a grid down scene as something sudden.
Our grid is stressed to the limit in summer and ice storms are pretty common with the great lakes surrounding us.
Then - it's certain for us to have economic problems when the US economy implodes - a mathematical certainty in maybe 10 years? After the natural gas boom fades.
After that .... pandemic
Singlecell:
A couple of points about your post.
1. Russia and China working together? Not a chance, read your history. They hate each other. Russia has more nukes pointed at China than anywhere else.
2. A Vacuum, or Thermobaric, Bomb uses a fuel / air mixture to ignite a large explosion. They can be very large. The US has been using them in Iraq and Afghanistan. Powerful yes, "decimate a nation", no.
Russia has admitted to an alliance with China which China has confirmed against the larger enemy - the US.
In my opinion pandemic is one of the most serious threats we face.
Well we could have a pissing match about which countries we should be concerned about, have alliances and so forth. My original post about not being concerned about Russia stems from the that fact that so many are still so paranoid about the cold war. I know plenty of Russian and I personally don't believe that Putin has a hidden agenda.
Nevertheless, this is redundant considering that you should be concerned about all countries right down to your neighbor should something occur.
The premise or suggestion I was insinuating was that I personally don't believe Russia to be an aggressor towards Canada for anything at this time.
And as I previously stated, I believe China and North Korea are the countries to watch for where an EMP is concerned. However, I suppose it's possible that it could come from any country....including Russia. If something happens from any country it won't really matter initially where it came from or what country is in bed with other countries because you will be consumed with trying to survive.

Just want to way in on this
IMO it would be one of the smaller third world countries to cause an EMP or a terrorist group
Since the cold war there has been so much eastern block stuff on the market
What effects the US will effect Canada as well
How well am I prepared , not to bad but I need things for bulk long term storage
I am pretty balanced in the short term up to 5-6 months
I just moved and I sure learned what I had once I started emptying corners and loading trailers
Water OK live right across from lake , have ice auger and hand pump for winter
Also ordered a large Birky
I'm on my own land now so able to plant garden in the spring
I have to buy wood for the stove this year no time to cut , split and cure
I have two 45 gal drums for my wind turbine
Once my friend is done farming for the year we will be welding it up
Any way still pluggin away I can only do what I can do
We live in a society of wolves ,
We can't fight back by creating more sheep
I believe if any happens. It will come from our own government or from south of us.

Hahahaha Perhaps I used the wrong word. Cripple, I meant CRIPPLE a nation. Anything that a vacuum bomb is used for is either gonna damage supplies, services or bring the economy to a screeching halt, so yeah cripple is plausible.
Personally, I'm not all that concerned with a possible war be it with Russia, China, or wherever.
Yes, EMP technology exists and perhaps Russia and China are leading the pack, but the US and it's allies probably aren't that far behind.
If anything, I would expect a new cold war...same as the nuclear cold war, just with different weapons...do it to me, and I'll do it to you...just a big mexican standoff.
HOWEVER, if those weapons were to fall into the hands of extremists or terrorists, it is a different ball game all together.
Let's just say for argument's sake that the 911 attacks were not a false flag perpetrated by the US government...
by the time the planes were in the air, Bin Laden was so well hidden, it's hard to believe that they ever tracked him down at all...
I know, debatable, but I'm trying to make a point.
If one of these guys figured out how to deploy an EMP weapon, they would be long gone before it ever went off...no mexican standoff = no reason not to do it!
Financial collapse, military action, famine, sickness. I'd like to be securely placed and hidden away with enough supplies to survive and get things growing. No way anybody can do that on their own though. Looking for community...
Those who survive a general collapse will be witnesses to the rebirth of new economies.
There will be some who will cling to the vestiges of the past: the flags, the ornaments of past authority, deeds of property, organizational structures, old laws... Like the fall of the Roman empire, some will not let go out of inertia. But new strong-willed groups will challenge the old status quo, and change will happen.
To survive and thrive is to adapt successfully to change. Participation in local governance, not reclusiveness, will be vital.
How well are you prepared? This is a two part answer. Materially you can be well prepared, but it is just as important to be spiritually prepared. Identitarianism and heritage will be key to starting up these new economies which will shape future political structures. Laws, borders, and other markers of civilization will be rebuilt from the ground up.
Those who take it upon themselves to gain the right mindset won't be in the dark when the lights go out.
When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fail, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.
-Edmund Burke, 1729 - 1797
I don't really have anything particular in mind I just believe in being ready for anything. Regardless of what happens, be it natural disaster, war, economic woes, my priority is food, shelter, safety for my family, at least long enough to get them through several months of uncertainty. My biggest fear is millions of heavily armed southern neighbors from the "greatest country in the world" streaming over the border and over running us due to something going on over there that forces them north. Living in Niagara I realize that it would be next to impossible to get away due to gridlock so I would have no other choice but to stay put, for a time. After watching the Black Friday Videos and seeing what they do to each other for a cheap t.v. there is no doubt what they would do for food or other supplies.
