One of my favorite Ontario preppers, Cam & Michelle Mather runs a self sufficient (or close at least) farm generating their own electricity, growing their own food, and generating their own income. A few times a year, they offer a workshop at their farm called the Living Sustainably and Independently, Ready for Rough Times, Hands-On, Solar-Powered, All-You-Can-Grow Workshop. Although I have never attended the workshop myself, I know a few people that have and they highly recommend it. Here is a brief overview...
Local authors Cam and Michelle Mather provide a complete overview to living a typical North American lifestyle powered entirely by renewable energy and prepping for the challenges of an uncertain future. They examine heat, hot water and electricity generation along with food production and storage with the theme of minimizing their impact on the planet. The full day workshop includes lunch and a chance to network with similarly minded individuals.

True, this is not free, but I have yet to talk to anyone who attended and felt they did not get value.
To some, gun training is expensive, to others, a survival school course is expensive.
It all depends on what you are looking to gain.
If you are not interested in self reliance, then it may not be your thing.
If you want to learn about producing your own energy, growing your own food, and earning a living off the land you own and a home based business from someone who does it...this might be worth the cost.
If you are not interested in self reliance, then it may not be your thing.
I disagree. I'm interested in self-reliance. It's justifying the costs involved and a full day of my time for looking at an existing system as being the issue rather then a lack of interest or 'not being my thing'. Some of my time will include a tour of a root cellar, berry patch, woodlot, pantry (as per their website) during this event. I feel a smaller one or two hour tour of the electrical system for a reasonable price would be more appropriate. I have no interest in paying money to see berry patches or woodlots.
True, this is not free, but I have yet to talk to anyone who attended and felt they did not get value.
They are obviously one of your favorite preppers for a reason so I do trust your judgement on this particular event.
I believe this workshop has a significant cost involved.
As per the website listing:
Cost for the day is $120 and includes lunch, refreshments and one of our books. Space is limited to 10 participants.
$120 seems excessive but I am actually considering to attend. It's likely I won't be learning anything new through 80% of the day, however, that 20% of knowledge could be invaluable. All self-sufficient homes are unique and every one I visit never ceases to amaze me. There's always an idea(s) discovered that I would have never considered.

A very credible source of mine confirms that this event is worth it:
You should go – it will be well worth it. The price is right – you get lunch and a book. Cam knows his stuff. I don’t know him personally but have followed his blogs for a while. I’m sure it will be amazing.

It is amazing - DH and I went last year. Lots of food for thought. Some points of view I am not in complete agreement with but Cam makes a great argument for them non-the-less. In my opinion - it was worth the money and the day out.

I spoke with Cam and Michelle. If I can get atleast 10 people they've agreed to lower the price to only $75. This is reasonable for a full day of their time. It's actually about 50% off of what they would normally charge. Anyways, I'll be attending on the 19th.

I just registered. Hoping to attend. Locked up the 15th and final spot. Will know within 2 days if I can/can't make it and will release the spot ASAP if I can't.
Pretty stoked to attend and meet some of you folks though!
It's coming... and it's going to hurt!
Cam and Michelle have added an extra seminar this fall due to interest exceeding space available.

Just wanted to express my gratitude to Cam & Michelle for having all of us this past weekend, and thanks to Che (i believe) for organizing it.
It was my first time attending any sort of prepper gathering and it was nice to meet everyone. There was a pile of useful and honest information shared by Cam & Michelle and my smartphone is packed with notes and pics.
If you were on the fence as to whether this workshop provided bang-for-buck, I say it was worth it and more.
Unfortunately poor weather meant the afternoon chat had to end sooner rather than later, so most folks had to hit the road, otherwise I bet some of us would have been happy to gab until the Mathers were forced to kick us out.
Thanks for a great day everyone.
Matt
