Is anyone interested in joining us for a 2 day/2 night wilderness survival retreat with David Amara? He's the guy that trained with Survivorman, Les Stroud!
The group will be small (4-6 people) so plenty of one-to-one instructional time and you can ask all the questions you want!
Date: Sept 13-15
Cost: $295/person (includes accommodation + food). Transportation not included so you will have to get there on your own.
Guys, girls, couples welcome to join us! We are in our early 30's, business professionals, easy-going city folks who want to learn some survival/outdoor skills and have fun doing it!
Location: 3.5 hrs NE from downtown Toronto.
Stroud took me to meet Arama at some Youth Leadership camp in Carnarvon years ago. Arama really impressed me.
He's not dramatic, but has a humerous edge to him. And boy does he know his stuff! As Stroud will tell anyone who will listen, Arama has taught Stroud everything he knows, and continues to teach him more every time they meet.
$300 isn't bad considering that more famous, yet less competent instructors charge you at least $1000 for the same time.
Sign up if you can afford it!
It's coming... and it's going to hurt!
you've only made one post and your selling something. yet you don't give any details on exactly what will be taught.
i get emails like this all the time. if you can't provide more info, a contact name or number then this seems like the spam to me.
call me untrusting, but this smells funny.

What smells funny Entropy? Pretty straightforward post as far as i can tell. No demand for money up front to some shady email or anything like that.

I got the same post in an email on United Survivalist Network. I'd go with the spam angle.
Really? Dangit.
My naive-cell count must be high today.

All considering I think that Less Stroud is a dangerous Idiot. Many of the thing that he shows on his shows are formulas for disaster.
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
Next to Cody Lundin, Stroud is hands-down the safest of any survivalist expert on television.
It's coming... and it's going to hurt!
Sorry guys but any show on TV about survival it is not even close to real life survival .If there is a whole camera crew watching you somewhere back in your mind you do not have to worry you will die .(Some of the survival shows are actually very funny )You would be surprise what every human being is able to do if it comes to life or death.some of the ideas i sow on TV are good but real life is real and every situation is different.(I have lived a little bit of it in remote parts of Kazachstan few years back and when I came back home my wife was sending me to mental hospital) You learn how to survive really fast. Henry
I did a bit of reading about Less Stroud and particularly about the production of his shows. There is a lot of biographical and autobiographical information on him on the web that details both his and his wife's backgrounds. It's interesting.
One interesting detail is about his Survival productions. He actually doesn't have camera crew with him. He operates all of his cameras and gear solo. More times than not actually trekking with the gear and having to manage his production of his ordeals is more tiresome than his endevours to survive in the situations he puts himself into.
One more interesting fact is that he seldom goes into a production in any area without first doing a lot of research about survival in those specific conditions. He hires local naturalists and survivalists and spends a considerable amount of time out in the areas with them learning about the specific fauna, wildlife and gathering techniques unique to each area.Although his productions make him out to be knowledgeable about hunting and gathering in these areas as though it's natural to him to just walk into any area and be capable; that certainly isn't the case. That isn't intended as a criticism, it's a wise man who knows his own limitations and is willing to take on the task of learning. He' also had episodes were he exploits the fact that he does this and how he creates an episode so there is no deception intended in his productions.
He has put himself into some pretty hairy situations, that's probably because even with the best guidance and experience behind a person the real life conditons do put you into some pretty hairy situations. Even the smallest of poor judgement calls seem to have a way of escalating into some real miserable conditions, especially when the wrath of weather and changing climatic situations creep into the scenario.
Unlike some other survivalist shows that totally misrepresent the situations, like staying evenings in the local resorts off camera and bringing in trained animals to enhance the production; Stroud keeps a relatively clean show considering the entertainment factor that drives "hollywood" success in the ratings race.
Question here really is whether the original post is for real or spam. I'm guessing if it's real the location stated would put you into the Muskoka area so it would be a good learning experience if it's true. Nice time of year for the bush down that way as well.
Sorry Rogue I did not mean to disrespect the guy.I tried to be realistic. You said yourself "he research first the conditions he is going to" In real life you do not have the advantage. If I will see guy in my bush does he going to attack me with knife or with gun or he just want some food for his kids and he will be grateful to me for the rest of his life.I like to see show where they drop guy in the middle of nowhere with only basic tools and pick him up year later dead or alive. He knows the conditions ahead. What am I prepping for ? Nuclear disaster, biological disaster ,chemical disaster, economic disaster, natural disaster ? Most likely combination. Secondly most of us have limited income and can use every penny.(also I am cheep bustard) Henry
I am sorry, but a few of the SAR guys that I know agree with me when I say that Stroud is dangerous. Yes he does go out into the extremes, but his rescue crew is but 10 minutes away at any time. Almost every episode that I have seen has slept on the bare ground and or rocks. Then he complains of be cold. He shows himself walking around, in the cold with head bare. He has set his shelter on fire. The man only knows what is taught him before he goes out into that particular wilderness. The only good thing that I say about him is that he knows his herb lore.
If you want survival advice I would recommend Ray Mears. Most of his YOU TUBE series is very informative and is used by the SAS for survival instruction. Ray Mears has been request by 5 inter-national military’s for survival training.

i checked out the guys website, there is nothing started as booked for that day, which either means it's a private booking or it's not happening. this guy does not introduce himself at all, he's not asking for money up front but doesn't give a run down of what your money is getting you, what you need to bring, any contract info. . .
i offer a great nature hike through some really pretty forest, you are welcome to camp there, and it only cost you $300 contact me if you'd like the tour! cheques needed in advance before directions are given 😮
maybe i'm overly caution, but he still hasn't update any of the stuff on it, no contact info, no details. . .
we are way to damn trusting as Canadians!

Sorry if it appears like spam because that is not my intention. I actually just discovered this forum and new to this whole survival + prepping thing so that is why I haven't posted or commented yet. I work a lot and am always traveling so unfortunately I don't have as much time to be on this site on a regular basis. I figure the easiest way for me to learn is to jump right into it and hire someone who can teach me a few things. David Amara was highly recommended and he gave me a good group rate so I was just being nice and extending the offer. If you decide to go, you will be PAYING HIM direct (not me so I'm not doing any advertising or trying to scam anyone)!
As a matter of fact, you could call David yourself and bypass me altogether. You will just have to mention that you want to join "Geoff's Group" on those specific dates in order to get the discount rate. Hopefully this clears up any doubt and mistrust. I have nothing but good intentions to help and add value to this group. 🙂
The location is Kargus Lake.
