In my youth i would often contemplate and wonder about SHTF scenarios and how i'd react/survive.

As I have aged those daydreams have subsided, replaced by the realities and duties and responsibilities of now.

Often, events have made me glad no real SHTF senario has curtailed the priviledged life i get to live as a Canadian. Things like marrying my wife, the magic of the life of my kids, a relaxing chat with my brother as we sit in our sugar bush, not having to worry about a civil strife in my yard or on my streets... all remind me how lucky i am in the now.

Today i can add one more thing to the list. Quality and available Medicare.

I was diagnosed with a thyroid cancer today and i was immediately grateful to have the care and talent available to me that our current society and regional situation provides. I couldn't imagine having to face this fight without it. Couldn't imagine looking at my 4yr old and 8 month old and know that in 1 yr they likely wouldn't have a dad.

Instead i will likely be a-okay in a few months with no lasting effect beyond an altered voice.

Damn lucky and not shy to admit it. Thankful that all i prepare for will likely never come to pass.

Thank you Henry and Farmgal.

I'm surrounded by positive support - so much that sometimes it makes me grumpy lol - as well as other cancer survivors. I'm truly not overly worried.

I just thought i'd share my PoV as i see many here really stress and get worked up about what-may-come and being "prepared", to the point they forget to live and enjoy the now.

Yeah, crap may hit the fan tomorrow... but for today you live in a great country with the best of everything, so enjoy it while you can and don't go crazy about what could happen.

😀

Sounds like you have a positive attitude, that will take you a long when no matter what happens in life. 🙂

Prays and positive thoughts from here also.

You are right about ppl stressing. If something happens, it happens. Main thing is be prepared as best one can be.
We can't control others or the weather, but we sure can do for ourselves.

Good luck on your journey.

Me too. I haven't been through what you have, but military injuries, a sister and friend who are survivors/surviving cancer, and having been places where clean water takes active effort and those where women have few or no rights and protections, I feel pretty damn lucky to be here and now. I am very, very thankful that there is a fair chance my nephew's generation will not see a nation-ending or region-ending upheaval, just as his grandfather's son's generation and my own so far has.

I'm glad to see you with a good prognosis and what seems to be a fair to absolutely excellent disposition. I'll keep you in my thoughts anyway.

More positive thoughts for you man, you're gonna be fine.

I was similarly grateful recently when my girlfriend got diagnosed and treated for multiple blood clots in her lungs. I can tell you that one of the thoughts that went through my head that night was how freaking ridiculous I was. Had months of food, and an arsenal of guns meant to keep us safe. And all of it completely useless against something as stupid as a blood clot.

Cynical though I am about the fate of civilization, I wish it and all of us a long life. Glad you got yourself situated, good luck to you.

Sorry to hear about your new challenge but wondrful to see your positive attitude. It makes a world of difference. My wife is 17 years clear of breast cancer. Her attitude and desire to see her daughter grow up is, I am absolutely convinced, as much a part of the cure as any of the treatments.
My absolute best to you. And don't foget - sometimes you still have to be the strong one in the family reassuring your wife and children that it will be OK.

Hey Henry, thanks for the well wishes. Happy Easter to you and your family as well.

I'm not in Central/Western Ontario much any more, but after attending a couple events in Eastern ON, i hope to hit a couple of the 2014 Prepper gatherings in your neck of the woods. Maybe we'll catch up there.
