Lots of sun, gentle breezes, a certain smell in the air.... and temperatures inside -10!

lol

Syruping season is nearly upon us. Who else has the bug? Any setup improvements this year? Anyone trying it for the first time?

I never posted any pics of our DIY evaporator.

The boiler delivered and leveled up. Just a dirt & stone bed below it, leveled off with soil and patio stones. Supports the weight and seems to be holding well.

The boiler fired up. Hasn't quite hit the evaporation rate i was hoping for, but we have plenty of tweaking to do yet and never did get it insulated quite as well as i'd hoped.

Our guests enjoy our outdoor kitchen and cooking stove. A 3'x4' cooking surface helps deliver some massive feasts.

Projects to complete/add:
- Finish shack exterior with cedar slabs. Get rid of the tarp walls.
- Finish off shack shelving and racks to improve storage and organization.
- Build tower for 500 gallon sap holding tank that will gravity feed sap into boiler.
- Play around with a DIY reverse osmosis evaporator.
- Finish shack's cupola, although current venting seems to work well enough.

I'd really like to manage to get over the 250L mark. That'd give our family 100L to generously split for our own consumption, and 150L to sell or barter with.

But, although our bush and evaporator could theoretically provide that much syrup... life always seems to throw health, work, schedule, expenses and other obstacles in the way that seem to derail that goal. We're lucky if we get just enough to last us through the year.

For now i'll try to treat it as just the greatest hobby every. But the longer i work in this "career" job, the hungrier I am to leave and make honey, syrup and get back into subsistence farming.
