Hey folks - getting together some medical preps beyond the basics and was hoping for some advice. I want to get the 5-10 most used antibiotics or prescription based meds. I have loads of basic med preps, looking for suggestions on ones that you need a script for now and that would be next to impossible in a SHTF situation. I have heard about the fish antibiotics, not really the route I want to go. I do work for several doctors and they will right me a script for anything as long as it was not perks or something addictive. Any thoughts?
Given your situation I would talk with the MD's and see what their opinions are. You have the MOST valuable knowledge right at your finger tips. Please share the results with the rest of us.
I agree. I think that you should list the medical conditions you may be expecting and ask the MD's what they would suggest.
Some things you may want to have antibiotics for may include...
Dental infection or preventative antibiotics after an extraction
Infections caused by a broken skin injury
Internal infections such as pneumonia
Milder infections of the ear/nose/throat region
STD's....I know, but it's worth mentioning
Different infections need different antibiotics, so don't be afraid to ask the pro's...especially since you have them at your disposal.
Also, you will want to know just when to use them and when not to.
As above......fungal infections become a real bain once normal hygiene practices begin to diminish but most ignore this fact for the more obvious problems.

Brilliant advice right there.
For any others who don't have that oppertunity, I might have suggested to go with natural remedies, that was my second line of action if nothing else was available.
If your home library contains more volumes about survival-related topics than your local public library, you might be a prepper.
Good question, make sure to ask on quantity as well. ie based on your body weight and the severity of the issue you may have to take X amount for X long. That is as important as knowing what type to take.
I have read many books like, where there is no doctor and where there is no dentist. I also started reading pdfs by pharma companies...that they send out to doctors and hospitals to tell them how to use items and medicine. if you can find them online great if not call the company.
Post your results if you can .
thanks
Will be speaking with several docs over the next couple of weeks in casual settings. Will ask the questions you asked and try to get a good general list together.
Check out minimalistsurvival channel on youtube, he has some very informative info about anti's and such

we have went and stocked up
the problem with stocking anything you are not qualified to administer in a pre shtf world is after shtf you still wont be qualified to administer them the wrong a.b for the wrong condition is
worse for you ten fold i would however look into poltices bred milk etc they work very very well there are many old methods for common aliments we no longer use theyre barley glossed over in med school! also 1 3m dust mask and 1 container of hand sanitizer is worth more than 100 pounds of a medicine you are not familar with for a condition you cannot properly diagnose

there is nearly this same conversation at this link http://internationalpreppersnetwork.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=505
i post a few times on the danger of antibiotic use in non MD/DDS people. . . saying that, with education some of those dangers are lessened (Lessened not eliminated)
i've also talked to the company that makes fish biotics and have confirmed that they are not picked up off the lab floor and they are in fact the same as human use drugs but not sold as human use.

antibiotics are NOT all 3 a day for 10 days.
z packs are 2x on day one, then 1x for the next four days, some are only 1-2 a day for 7 to 10 days. this is why non MD people should not stock meds, you can cause a great deal of damage without proper knowledge of which drugs help which problems.
as an RN i work with antibiotics every shift, i've been doing this 10 years, and when i call a doc with a new signs of infection, i have an idea about what drug they will pick, and many times they pick something else, when i talk to my pharmacy buddies, they tell me why the doc made a good choice and sometimes why they picked that drug. some times it's out of preference, sometimes it's out of some unknown with blood work or exposure, sometimes it's out of ignorance.
i have read copies of the new antibiotic usage guide, some older drugs like keflex are no longer used for things like dog bites, but since this new info has been around, i've been Rx keflex for a dog bite. . . some docs are just not up to date. . . the 2010 guide lines for tentus shots were quoted too me by one doc then another one said the first doc was wrong. . . the second doc was out of date!
for bites you should pick clavulin, because something like 90% of bites need the β-lactamase (beta lactamase) inhabiting effects, but you usually take this 2x day, while the amoxil on it's own may be a bigger dose and 3x day. taking too much or too little can cause problems.
what problems you may ask?
is it diarrhea or c-diff? is your liver causing troubles? what about your kidney's shutting down? is that a real allergic reaction or a real bad one? what do you do now.
there are good reasons to keep antibiotics but there is a lot of educations to go with it. you can kill people.
