This is perfectly straight grained wood, maybe Beech. Makes it look easy.

True enough but accidents can happen just as easily chopping wood with an axe.

You see his hand is on top of the wood- mistake. You should hold on the side somewhere so your fingers aren't the first point of contact. Much safer with this machine (same strike point every time) than an axe but good form is safer.
